In the state of Mississippi, many talented running backs have already been offered chances to continue playing the game they love at the next level. But what about the players who have the talent but haven’t received those opportunities yet? Today, we highlight several running backs who have drawn our eyes this season with some college level talent to them.
John Peterson | Vancleave
The state’s leading senior rusher, Peterson has rushed for over 1,493 yds and 19 TDs so far this season. Week in and week out, the stud back has put up video game numbers at Vancleave. Standing at 5’11” 185, Peterson has good size for the position and can most likely work his way up to 200 in a college weight room. As a back, Peterson has solid speed and burst in the open field, but makes his money with his field vision. He easily sees holes open up and can find new running lanes when he gets to the second level with the defense in pursuit. In addition to his vision, Peterson can break arm tackles and keeps his feet running on contact. Very solid and well rounded back who will be looking for a college opportunity at some level when the season is over.
Keion Mays | Independence
Totaling over 1461 yds and 24 TDs so far this season, Keion Mays is another uber-productive player that is still waiting to garner some attention. The senior has received some NAIA interest so far, but nobody has pulled the trigger on an offer… yet! A 5’10” 190 pound quarterback in high school, Mays has the perfect size and skillset to make an impact in a running back room at the next level. Mays is a fluid runner who can turn on the burners in the open field. He shows the ability to make opposing defenders miss in space and can run through contact when the pile starts to build up. On top of his athletic gifts, Mays does a great job at finding open rushing lanes when things break down in the pocket and on designed quarterback runs. Really complete back with the athleticism and football skill to be a big time player at the next level.
Chandler Chapman Chandler Chapman 6'0" | 190 lbs | RB St. Stanislaus | 2023 State MS | St Stanislaus
We have been high on Chapman for a while over here and it is still crazy to all of us that he has yet to receive an opportunity to play college ball yet. Standing at 5’11” 190, Chapman has great size for the position with even better athleticism to match it. Chapman is an explosive runner who can score from anywhere on the field. A patient runner, he allows his blocks to set up well before violently exploding through the hole he finds. His ability to find cut back lanes when his blocks just aren’t there is off the charts as well. While he has all the qualities and make up of a next level running back, Chapman produces at a high level on the defensive side of the football at safety too. Really talented football player that should be receiving phone calls by the time the season is over.
Jeremiah Crystian | Port Gibson
Jeremiah Crystian is a guy whose mid-season tape we stumbled upon, and oh my can this guy absolutely go. If colleges are looking for a fast and explosive back to add to their 2023 class, they should look no further than heading down to Port Gibson. Chrystian stands at 5’10” 190 but what makes him such a promising prospect is his next level speed. This is a violent runner who earns every yard he puts on the stat sheet. Crystian has some wiggle to him and can make defenders miss in the open field, but most the time he prefers to run right by them. In addition, his thicker build makes him tough to bring down – you cannot attempt to arm tackle this guy at all. With all his untapped potential as a college level back, Chrystian is one of the biggest sleepers of the class. Look out for this guy to add some college opportunities soon.
Maurice Travis | Poplarville
A key contributor to the 7-1 Hornets, Maurice Travis is one of the slot backs in a wing-t offense that has been giving the state fits this season. Travis is a big bodied back that has great speed in the open field. Already playing in a triple option attack, Travis is a perfect fit at the next level for a similar role in a similar offense. He does a great job at finding the edge and turning on the burners to score from anywhere on the field when he has the ball in his hands. As fast as he is, Travis also has some natural ball carrier vision to him and is really tough to bring down due to his mobility. Travis is also an impressive blocker and has a lot of raw strength to him. Although his team doesn’t pass a whole lot by design, Travis is a smooth route runner with great hands downfield. Slept on college prospect who is still waiting to hear his name called.
