Continue ReadingThe game has undoubtedly always been won or lost up front by the offensive and defensive linemen in the trenches and this saying has held true thus far this fall.
I define superlative defensive linemen as a “Dawg”, and stellar offensive linemen as a “Hog” respectfully.
The quarterbacks, receivers, and running backs will normally always be first the ones to get most of the recognition in the press but the truth is that the “Hogs and Dawgs” are one of the most important factors to any team’s playoff hopes. The prospects listed below bring elite production, skill, and are all guys to keep an eye on.
HOGS TO WATCH
Lucas Barrientes– Midland Legacy High – Class of 2024
Lucas is a 6’3 260 pound offensive line prospect out of Midland Legacy that has raised his stock this fall and put some impressive performances on tape. He impressed me with his ability to sustain his block at the point of attack and drive his defender off of the football on the backside. As you’ll see in his tape below he has a powerful punch and shown great patience and posture in pass protection.

Barrett Eddlemon – La Vernia High – Class of 2023
Barrett is a 6’4 290 pound offensive linemen out of the San Antonio area with a slew of scholarship offers from the likes of Yale, Columbia, Sam Houston, Baylor, Penn, and the Air Force academy. He has done a great job developing himself this off season and has played consistent and been lights out from a technique perspective.

TJ Shanahan TJ Shanahan 6'4" | 300 lbs | OL Westlake | 2023 State TX – Westlake High – Class of 2023
TJ is pound for pound one of the most physically dominant players in the country. He has the ability to take the opposing teams best defensive player and erase him from the stat sheet. He has quick feet and overwhelming strength at the point of attack and the All American offensive tackle has pledged his commitment to Texas A&M. Attached below is a early week one example of the power that he possesses.

DAWGS TO WATCH
Jordan Renaud Jordan Renaud 6'4" | 250 lbs | DL Lewisville | 2023 State TX – Tyler Legacy High – Class of 2023
Jordan is a 6’3 245 pound explosive edge defender that transferred from Lewisville High to Tyler Legacy and has blown himself up this fall. He has great football IQ, good hands, an explosive first step and is a crafty pass rusher that doesn’t stop his feet. He has scholarship offers from virtually everywhere in the country and recently pledged his verbal commitment to Coach Nick Saban and the Alabama crimson tide. He picked the University of Alabama over Oklahoma and Texas A&M and it will be interesting to see how his recruitment plays out leading up to signing day.

Billy Walton Billy Walton 6'4" | 230 lbs | DL South Oak Cliff | 2023 State TX – South Oak Cliff High – Class of 2023
Billy is a 6’4 225 pound edge defender out of South Oak Cliff High that epitomizes the term Dawg. He is tough, smart, explosive with his first step off of the line of scrimmage, solid in coverage, and tackles like a player that weighs over 250 pounds plus. The University of Texas commit has made big plays on the field and continued to be a leader and play hard despite his teams slow start on the year. Despite his team losing a few early games he has been consistent and continued to play 100 miles an hour and will be fun to watch as the playoffs approach.
