Before this week Lincoln-Southwest was undefeated and Papillion La Vista was winless so far. The Monarchs had a tough schedule. They lost in overtime to Millard North in week one. After that they fell in the Papio Bowl against Papillion LaVista South and to Lincoln Southeast. Lincoln Southwest had a good streak starting this week. They would knock down Lincoln High, Columbus and Lincoln East. The questions going into this game were if the Monarchs could pull the upset or would Southwest continue to dominate.
