Continue Reading6A is a class that is loaded with talent. It’s hard to rank these teams cause there are so many across the state that can win big games on any given night. Region 2-6A and 4-6A have been known to compete at a very high level every Friday night. These rankings are my opinion only. I took the time to put together a top 6.
1. Brandon
Brandon has came on this season in a very impressive way. For two weeks straight they have beat top 10 teams in good fashion. A blind man can see that they have a bad taste in their mouth after losing the state championship last year in December. If they keep up this pace they are going to be right back at the Rock again playing for the gold football. This team is loaded.
Brandon has a very loaded offense with guys getting recruited everywhere. Landon Varnes Landon Varnes 5'11" | 170 lbs | QB Brandon | 2024 State MS is holding down the fort like generals should. Jarvis Durr Jarvis Durr 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Brandon | 2023 State MS hits you with so much speed out of the backfield and Nate Blount IV Nate Blount IV 5'11" | 220 lbs | RB Brandon | 2024 State MS is a load to deal with bringing aggression all night. They have Quincy Phillips Quincy Phillips 5'8" | 180 lbs | ATH Brandon | 2025 State MS , Jr in the slot who is coming on in a nice way and Lester Miller Lester Miller 6'0" | 160 lbs | WR Brandon | 2023 State MS is a senior WR who is a magician. Their defense comes to play ball every Friday night as well. They held that loaded Madison Central offense to only 7 points Friday. This week they play Clinton.
I truly think these guys will go undefeated this season. If they keep playing well it will be hard to stop them.
2. Starkville
Starkville is going to be a team that competes year in and year out. It is so much talent to choose from there and this year we can say the same about this team. They are super loaded and ready to try to put together a championship season. Starkville has started out 2-0 and Friday they defeated their rival, West Point, 40-13. They were hitting on every cylinder.
Starkville is super loaded on offense with QB Trey Petty Trey Petty 6'1" | 190 lbs | QB Starkville | 2024 State MS calling the shots. They have Jaylon York Jaylon York 6'0" | 175 lbs | ATH Starkville | 2023 State MS and Stonka Burnside playing receiver, catching passes and leaving dust. Their RBs are able to rotate and give each other breaks. You won’t see too many of those guys with their tongue hanging. Their defense is very nasty. Eric Thomas, Jr is not messing around on the edge. He also is a motivator. He keeps those guys going. Stonka is a very good safety and they have Brandon Short at corner who is a good one.
Starkville has a lot of talent this year. If they keep it together we could see them back in the North Half.
3. Tupelo
This one probably surprised a lot of you. Just give me some time to give you the details of this placement. Tupelo has a good coaching staff just like most of the 6A programs across this beautiful state. These guys know how to get these kids ready. They missed the playoffs last season with a 7-4 record. I can only imagine how that feels.
Tupelo is a team that will be tossing the ball around a lot. Jeremiah Harrell Jeremiah Harrell 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Tupelo | 2024 State MS is a 2024 QB that knows how to thread the needle. They have Witherspoon and Patton holding down the receiver positions and both of these guys know what to do to get open. It will be hard for defenses to stop them going into division play. They have a good offensive line that knows how to protect their QB. Tupelo has a good defense that has been stingy these first two weeks. These guys seem to be upset every time they touch the field.
4. Madison Central
Madison Central took a loss to Brandon Friday and that moved them from my number 2 spot. I expected them to play a closer game to Brandon. I don’t think this puts a bad look on the way their season will play out. They have an amazing coaching staff that will have this team back ready to compete. Expect them to come back and be real upset these next few weeks. Their offense is still full of talent and they have some guys on defense who love to make plays. They will bounce back from losing to Brandon.
5. Ocean Springs
Ocean Springs has been putting up some points again this year, per usual. These guys know how to score and get the crowd hype. They have very exciting games and they put on a show. Last year I had them ranked in the top spot all the way until their second round loss to Oak Grove. I need to see them finish out this year very strong. They have the potential to do it. The biggest thing is that their defense is stepping up in a major way this year. It will be good to see them keep that up. Defense wins championships.
6. Oxford
Oxford started off the season with a tough defeat from Brandon. It just wasn’t their night. I don’t think that is going to define their season. I feel like they are going to continue to stay on a roll and have some improvements this season. They have a very good QB in Mack Howard Mack Howard 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Oxford | 2023 State MS and Roman Gregory knows how to tote the rock. Their receivers don’t mind going to get the ball. Malaki Pegues Malaki Pegues 6'3" | 225 lbs | DL Oxford | 2023 State MS and Alex Sanford Alex Sanford 6'2" | 220 lbs | LB Oxford | 2023 State MS are a force to be reckoned with on defense. They both bring great leadership to their defensive side of the football. Their victory over South Panola isn’t one to look over. This is not the South Panola of the old days, but they aren’t a pushover team.
