Continue ReadingWhile he only jumped three spots, Oceanside Collegiate offensive tackle Monroe Freeling Monroe Freeling 6'7" | 285 lbs | OL Oceanside Collegiate Academy | 2023 State SC becoming the new No. 1 in the Class of 2023 was among the biggest discussions the South Carolina scouts had over the last few weeks.
Freeling, a recent Georgia commit, got a slight boost from his college plans, sure. But what we’ve also seen is the type of player who fought for that No. 1 ranking on every single play. As if his efforts on offense weren’t enough, he pitches in by putting his huge frame on the defensive line as well.
We’d be remiss not to mention him, but up and down the rankings, we saw plenty of other movement, too.
NEW TOP QB
Right around this time last year, we saw South Florence signal-caller LaNorris Sellers LaNorris Sellers 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB South Florence | 2023 State SC go down for the year with a shoulder injury that required surgery and was possibly going to derail his college plans.
Within months, he was putting up unbelievable weight on squat racks and then showed up to 7-on-7s with and even stronger cannon for a right arm and the type of accuracy that has some Power 5 programs drooling. Some of the quarterbacks behind him in the rankings are verbally committed to more notable college programs.
But as of this moment, Sellers is the one showing off the most tools and the highest ceiling – not only this season, but in the years ahead.
BIG BODIES MAKING THE CLIMB
Dorman offensive linemen DJ Geth DJ Geth 6'4" | 300 lbs | OL Dorman | 2023 State SC has been steadily climbing our boards for the last year. He did so against by cutting his previous rank in half all the way down to No. 23. We already had him top-50 overall before he (like his father before him) announced his plan to sign with North Carolina. But he’s not done his ascension yet.
Cane Bay offensive lineman Kameron Durant Kameron Durant 6'4" | 315 lbs | OL Cane Bay | 2023 State SC (Up 37 spots) has had a big summer that included a commitment to East Carolina. Cane Bay’s offense is perfectly suited to help him stand out right on through his trip slightly north after this season.
That crew was also joined by three previously unranked linemen who shot straight into the top-100 overall rankings:
*Gaffney defensive lineman Nathan Johnson Nathan Johnson 6'6" | 225 lbs | DL Gaffney | 2023 State SC (6-foot-6, 235 pounds), who jumped all over an Appalachian State offer;
*AC Flora offensive lineman Ben Holmes Ben Holmes 6'7" | 285 lbs | OL AC Flora | 2023 State SC (6-foot-7, 270 pounds), who is committed to Wofford and could be a first-year starter for the Terriers;
*Porter Gaud defensive lineman Zihaire Jackson Zihaire Jackson 6'2" | 210 lbs | DL Porter Gaud | 2023 State SC (6-foot-2, 210 pounds), who also stars as an effective H-Back.
