I will be breaking down what I have seen from them last fall and this off-season to compare them to a few of the NFL’ s current and former stars. I enjoy doing these type of comparisons for several reasons. Mainly because I often tell student-athletes that they should consume as much football as possible. Whether it is highlights or game film, watching a player with a similar skill-set and demeanor as themselves will assist in helping kids fully understand their positions’ and ultimately the game as a whole. Below are 5 prospective student athletes that are more than capable of furthering their careers beyond the HS level. I hope you enjoy these comparisons!
Omar Scott Omar Scott 6'2" | 200 lbs | RB Winston Academy | 2024 State MS | 6’2 195 | RB/LB | 2024 | Winston Academy
Mr. Scott is a talented 2024 prospect, by way of Winston Academy, that is a man among boys on tape. Level of competition may be a factor, nonetheless I see this kid as a problem for any high school defenders and defenses in the near future. No matter the competition level, Omar Scott Omar Scott 6'2" | 200 lbs | RB Winston Academy | 2024 State MS will be a name and force to be reckoned with. Omar is a kid with impressive explosion and decent power that possesses an unorthodox running style. Though he runs with a high center of gravity, Omar’s overall game is well rounded and he is a productive 2024 prospect. Standing at 6’2 and weighing nearly 200 lbs, Omar has sufficient speed and burst. Scott showed that he has enough wiggle to turn 4-8 yard runs into 20+ yard gains. He has a powerful core and upper-body that both allow him to easily fend off defenders with a daunting stiff-arm. He is a decisive runner that wastes no time getting his foot in the ground to make timely cuts. The prospective student athlete has enormous potential as a football player. Omar plays Linebacker defensively, and also served as a return specialist for the Patriots last season. He will likely be a RB/LB prospect depending on how he fills out athletically. Scott was only a sophomore last season and he was able to make an upperclassmen’s type of contribution to his football team. Look for him to have a breakout season come this fall.
NFL Comparison: Derrick Henry
Thad Ransier | 6’4 250 | DE/DT | 2023 | Lamar
Quick, Long, Finisher, and Explosive are a few of the notes that I have for Thad Ransier. The 2023 Defensive prospect is a raw talent that is just beginning to figure out his body and its’ full potential. He plays with passion and has a high motor. I enjoyed watching how he hunted ball carriers on his tape. He moves well and carries 6’4 250 well. As a Junior last season, his technique was impressive. Thad has strong hands and showed knock back ability on certain clips. Apart from his physical prowess as a defender, I was most impressed with how quickly Thad is able to process what he sees on the football field. Ransier seems to understand blocking schemes and how to attack them. His academic background supports exactly what I gathered from watching his tape. Thad is a 4.0 student who was able to score a 31 on his ACT. This kid had tremendous upside and seems to be a great kid with a coach-able demeanor. At times, Ransier has shown the inability to play with good leverage and a decent pad level, which could be to his detriment. On the other hand, I’m a firm believer in that skill being a attribute that can be taught. I believe with the right coaching, its an easy fix for him and it will surely impose problems once he figures that out.
NFL Comparison: Deforrest Buckner
Carson Graham Carson Graham 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB St Joseph | 2023 State MS | 6’1 205 | LB | 2023 | St. Joseph
Carson Graham Carson Graham 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB St Joseph | 2023 State MS is a 2023 prospective athlete that has all the makings of a pure, bonafied inside LB. He has prototypical size and build along with the necessary speed to hunt down ball carriers and cover in pass defense. His closing speed and ability to make sure tackles is what jumped off of his tape to me the most. The up and coming senior is poised to have a monster year and follow up his 121 tkl season Junior campaign that is hard to forget. Graham has great instinctual capabilities when it comes to accurately identifying plays. Carson uses these instincts along with pre-snap reads to beat would-be blockers to certain spots on the field and make plays. He moves well to be his size. Carson runs sideline to sideline with ease. His pass coverage is where he struggles most, but it’s less of a struggle and more of him getting used to covering guys and improving his spatial awareness. Carson Graham Carson Graham 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB St Joseph | 2023 State MS is a former Defensive Player of the year who will only improve going into his senior year. I’m looking forward to seeing him excel this fall and improve his stock as a prospective recruit.
NFL Comparison: Brian Cushing
Alex Larry | 6’0 280 | DT | 2023 | Greenwood
Alex Larry has 0-3 technique written all over him! The 2023 Prospect out of Greenwood, MS is a kid that has grit, determination, and a motor. All of these are impressive attributes that make up any decent DL, but Alex checks these boxes and more. He has long arms, a quick first step and the knock back ability of a grown man. Larry understands technique and how to effectively shed offensive linemen with violent hands and active feet. Alex is going to be an exceptional player if he works on his movement in tight spaces and agility. This off-season he has made strides in doing just that. I am certain that he has plenty of strength and leverage to play inside & outside defensive techniques on the next level. Larry will surely make his senior campaign his money year. After a solid season last year and gaining much needed experience, this year will be a breakout year for this promising talent. Keep and eye out for him this fall!
NFL Comparison: Cameron Heyward
JJ Claiborne JJ Claiborne 6'0" | 215 lbs | RB Jefferson County | 2024 State MS | 6’0 215 | RB/LB | 2024 | Jefferson County
JJ Claiborne JJ Claiborne 6'0" | 215 lbs | RB Jefferson County | 2024 State MS out of Adams County Christian is a young kid with plenty of potential and upside to be a 2024 recruit. He possesses good size, decent speed, and great forward lean for a running back his age. Granted, JJ doesn’t have blow the roof off speed, but he is quick and twitchy enough to leave defenders in his path with his running style. As previously mentioned, when Claiborne runs he has admirable forward lean. The kid knows how to effectively run with a low center of gravity, behind his pads. I was also impressed with how savvy JJ was at setting up blocks for his offensive line to make timely cuts through the defense. Claiborne plays LB defensively so his physicality is surely a by-product of being able to deliver hits and taking them as well. The young stud was a reliable back for Adams Co. Christian last year; however he will likely see an increased usage rate from his Sophomore year to his Junior year. He is returning to his hometown and team in Jefferson County. I’m eager to see what he will do with the added carries in a more demanding role for another offense.
