Over two days, players compete in drills, 1-on-1’s, 7 on 7’s, and team competitions for evaluation in front of multiple media outlets and college coaches. North Carolina had several standout players, and we will highlight them here. The All-American Challenge was held at West Cabarrus High School.
QB Ben Mauney – Burns
Mauney was named one of the Top 5 quarterbacks of the camp overall. I had a chance to interview Ben, and he is a well-spoken and confident young man. He has had the luxury of playing a lot early in his career, and he has some talented teammates to help him shine this upcoming season. A 6’2 player in the Class of 2024, I expect a big-time season from this young man, and his recruitment will reflect that as well.
TE William Brown – Independence
I feel like every camp I go to, #1 Will is there, and #2 he is winning some type of award. This camp was no different as he was named Tight End MVP. Great hands and an ability to separate against linebackers and safeties are impressive as always. Will also ran good routes competing in 1 on 1’s and 7 on 7’s once again to earn the best of his group out of the entire camp. A 2024 player, I am excited to see Will’s offseason success translate on Friday Nights.
OL Umar Rockhead Umar Rockhead 6'4" | 265 lbs | OL Mallard Creek | 2024 State NC – Mallard Creek
We spotlighted Umar before because of his great size and future potential. Even in the short time since that last camp, Umar has definitely added weight and looks stronger overall. Umar was named Top 5 Offensive Line at this camp and it was for the same reasons we have highlighted before – excellent technique, great hand placement, and great agility with his footwork. Umar should continue to gain even more college interest as the season goes along. Being a 2024 OL, I expect Umar’s recruiting to increase exponentially as we go through the season.
RB Malik Fuller Malik Fuller 5'11" | 205 lbs | RB North Lenoir | 2025 NC – North Lenoir
I honestly did not know much about Malik, especially with him being a 2025 player. But, at 6’1 and 200 pounds – he was very impressive as a running back. Good agility and change of direction at his size at a young age are not commonly found. I took a look at his film, and he has home-run speed in the open field and great vision as a running back. He plays some other positions – most notably safety on defense so he could get that ATH designation that is popular, but he will be a fun player to watch as he grows and gets older.
Jesus Becerra Jesus Becerra 6'2" | 280 lbs | OL Draughn | 2024 State NC – Draughn
Becerra won the MVP for the Offensive Line position against some pretty good competition which was very impressive. A 2024 player at 6’2 and 275 pounds, he has good size with some room to grow and add even more muscle and good weight to his frame. Looking at his film, I love how he plays both OL and DL and is aggressive on both sides of the ball. Even in pass protection – he has multiple pancakes of his defender and keeps looking for work until the play is over. My kind of lineman!
