A few weeks ago, Cibola rising senior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="360532" first="Daniel" last="Benham"] couldn’t have dreamed he would be in this position.
But then [player_tooltip player_id="137861" first="Aden" last="Chavez"], the state’s top 2023 prospect, stunned the New Mexico high school football community by deciding to relocate to Vero Beach in Florida primarily to boost his recruiting prospects. As a result, Benham has been elevated to the Cougars’ No. 1 QB on the depth chart.
Friday afternoon we got our first look at Benham during 7-on-7 competition at the University of New Mexico’s indoor facility. The Lobos are currently hosting a 3-day camp, which began Thursday and continues Saturday. The opposing quarterback? None other than 2023 La Cueva QB [player_tooltip player_id="137862" first="Aidan" last="Armenta"], who led a team pieced together from campers.
Armenta showcased his uncanny accuracy on deep throws on several occasions. Armenta, who picked up his first two offers from Eastern New Mexico and New Mexico Highlands earlier this week, told Prep Redzone New Mexico that he will tour FCS Northern Arizona next weekend when he and his La Cueva teammates are in Flagstaff, AZ for a 7-on-7 tournament. After that, he plans to visit UNLV.
Friday night, Armenta announced on social media that he had been offered by UNM, his third offer this week. 2025 La Cueva DE/LB [player_tooltip player_id="351056" first="Mason" last="Posa"] and 2023 Cleveland WR [player_tooltip player_id="139523" first="Nic" last="Trujillo"] were also offered by the Lobos, which continues to make recruiting in-state players a major priority.
A new school has started to express serious interest in Armenta: Arkansas State. ASU coaches saw Armenta throw at last weekend’s mega-camp at TCU and were impressed. They’re now trying to get Armenta to visit the ASU campus in Jonesboro, AR.
Defending Class 6A champion Cleveland sent a large contingent of players to the UNM camp and they competed together during the the 7-on-7 play. Among the Storm players participating in the camp are QB [player_tooltip player_id="139521" first="Evan" last="Wysong"] (committed to the Lobos), WR [player_tooltip player_id="139523" first="Nic" last="Trujillo"], RB [player_tooltip player_id="138204" first="Josh" last="Perry"] and LB [player_tooltip player_id="274701" first="Stratton" last="Shufelt"] (offered by UNM).
In the wake of [player_tooltip player_id="275488" first="Elijah" last="Brody"]’s transfer to West Mesa, Cleveland is searching for a backup QB. That’s why Trujillo took most of the snaps at QB on Friday while Wysong, one of the state’s fastest players (10.77 in the 100), mainly lined up at wide receiver.
