Oregon’s 2023 class is doing relatively well, with 21 athletes being offered D1 scholarships thus far. Back in the day the state had nowhere near that amount.
College football is incredibly tough regardless of the level. That said have a look at a few athletes who rank as some of the state’s best and project as potential division 1 athletes.
*No Particular Order
[player_tooltip player_id="147247" first="Earl" last="Ingle"] 6-1 215 OLB West Linn- Ingle is just flat out good. The reigning TRL Defensive POY impresses with overall athleticism. He would be the QB if the Lions weren’t loaded at the position. Look for him to garner a few FCS or mid major type offers before all is said and done.
[player_tooltip player_id="110242" first="Ryan" last="Oliver"] 6-3 195 QB Lakeridge- Oliver is wildly underrated in my opinion. He’s a year young for the grade and passed for 29 TDs/7 INTs, while hitting on 63% of his passes in his last 16 games. I would put him in the same conversation as [player_tooltip player_id="110171" first="Sam" last="Leavitt"], [player_tooltip player_id="110178" first="Jack" last="Wagner"], and [player_tooltip player_id="110187" first="Brock" last="Thomas"]. All who hold multiple D1 offers.
[player_tooltip player_id="110201" first="Hogan" last="Carmichael"] 6-5 200 QB Summit- Look for Carmichael to dominate 5A competition as he has the size and all the tools to play at the D1 level. He was instrumental in helping the Storm to the 6A quarterfinals last season, hitting on 62% of his passes with 19 TDs/3 INTs. His 10.5 yards per carry average help put an exclamation point on his overall athleticism.
[player_tooltip player_id="204578" first="Caleb" last="Clardy"] 6-1 200 LB David Douglas- One of the most impressive defenders in all of Oregon. I 100% agree with Brandon Huffman of 247, giving Clardy 3*s. He will be a Mt Hood Conference POY favorite.
Sanborne Melson 6-1 190 DB Jefferson- Melson has had a phenomenal off season, possessing outstanding physicality and coming from a football family. With continued progression he will be playing d1 ball somewhere.
[player_tooltip player_id="270064" first="Jake" last="Holmes"] 6-3 225 DE West Linn- The returning 1st team All TRL D end comes from a talented family with his brother Zach currently at Oregon St. Holmes will get a lot of attention from opponents with his success last year, to go along with his team being the projected #1 6A squad in the state.
[player_tooltip player_id="205818" first="Noah" last="Staley"] 6-0 220 FB/LB Jesuit- Staley projects as a Metro League Defensive POY favorite and one of the top fullbacks anywhere in the west, and maybe the nation. He has many traits similar to that of former Jesuit and current Oregon St FB Logan Horton, who was also a vicious hitter.
[player_tooltip player_id="342013" first="Zach" last="Wusstig"] 6-1 180 DB South Salem- One of the fastest rising prospects in all of Oregon. We’ve heard a lot about him over the last few months as he has excelled on the camp circuit and against top 7v7 competition. His recent move from 2A Jefferson to 6A South Salem should help from a recruiting standpoint.
[player_tooltip player_id="206763" first="Ryan" last="Berger"] 6-5 280 OL Liberty- The Pacific Conference CO Offensive lineman of the year has a stock that is rising quickly. He earned 2nd team all-conference honors on D, helping to show off his overall versatility. He will make one of the biggest jumps on the board when the rankings are updated.
[player_tooltip player_id="263787" first="Austin" last="Goetz"] 6-3 210 LB Tigard- Goetz has great size and is incredibly athletic. He is similar to cross town rival [player_tooltip player_id="206771" first="Will" last="Wilson"] of Tualatin, who is a D1 offer guy. Expect him to be on multiple FCS and Big Sky boards with all that he brings to the table.
[player_tooltip player_id="110175" first="Sully" last="McDaniel"] 6-3 220 LB Clackamas- From a size and overall athleticism standpoint, McDaniel checks both boxes. He is one of the top lacrosse athletes in the region and could very well have multiple D1s vying for his services there as well. He will have plenty of eyes watching him as Clack should be legit.
[player_tooltip player_id="205822" first="Payton" last="Roth"] 6-3 200 RB Jesuit- Roth looks like the real deal. He was the best player on the field in limited time last season due to injury. His combination of size and speed make him a very recruitable and appealing athlete to watch.
[player_tooltip player_id="217272" first="Charlie" last="Ozolin"] 6-1 180 Safety Summit- Look for Ozolin to be competing with teammate [player_tooltip player_id="110182" first="Chip" last="Allers"] for Oregon 5A Defensive POY honors. He is long with a tremendous upside, and brings raw instincts and intelligence to the game.
