Continue ReadingVicksburg had a very great season last year. Their defense is very nasty and their offense is flashy. Fourteen of their returning starters have have offers. Most of them are D1 offers. They averaged over 300 yards a game. Their running game is real thick and you better be ready to pack a punch when you play them. They had over 3500 rushing yards last season. Their defense only allows two guys to go over a hundred yards rushing all season. They only allowed one guy to pass over a hundred yards all season. Their third-down efficiency was 79%. They recorded 17 interceptions. They only missed 61 tackles. They only allowed 7 points a game in district play. This team is going to make a lot of noise throughout 5A North this season.
Malik Montgomery, RB, 6-1 220, 2024
Malik is coming back this season. He is a pound-for-pound kind of guy. He rushed for over 1100 yards last season with 12 touchdowns off 110 carries. He can be a speed guy or a guy that totes it straight up the middle. He has great vision and knows how to be patient and let the hole open up. He does a great job of accelerating when getting to open space. He does a great job of running behind his pads. Malik will be a great asset to Vicksburg this season. They love to run the ball and his skill adds a lot to their game.
Tyler Henderson, 6-0 170, WR, 2024
Tyler is an explosive receiver who will make a big name for himself next season. He is a true playmaker who doesn’t get his flowers due to him being in a run-first offense. He is a guy that can break a game open. He is one kid you are going to want to keep up with. I think he is going be a D1 guy. He has great hands and knows how to get space. He is also very quick on his feet. He is a return specialist for the Gators as well. He needs some work on his routes, but this kid can ball. Keep your eyes open for him.
Johnny Smith, 6-0 180, ATH, 2024
Smith is another guy that handles business on offense for the Gators. He has a lot of speed and has great vision. Johnny knows how to set up his blocks and does very well in their wing t offense. He is a great player to hand it to in the midst of the trickery thus offense possesses. He is also a great asset in the passing game. Smith has great hands and knows how to get yards after the catch. He is going to be very exciting for the Gators this year.
KD Sims, 6-1 190, WR, 2023
KD is another playmaker on offense for the Gators. He has great hands and knows how to play the game. He is a very crucial threat in the red zone. You better make sure you not only have your best cover guy, but also an aggressive guy on him in the redzone. He is mean around the pylon and he looks to come down the ball every time. KD also does a great job of blocking downfield. That’s one thing you don’t see a lot of in high school. When his runners are trying to score he makes sure he blocks throughout the whole play. He isn’t just lunging. When it’s a running play he turns into an offensive lineman.
Ronnie Alexander, 5-10 175 QB, 2024
Ronnie saw a lot of time last year when he was a sophomore. The days of being rattled are over. He is ready to lead this team to multiple victories this season. I think Ronnie is a guy who will play somewhere else besides QB at the college level. However, for Vicksburg he is the gunslinger. Ronnie can tote the rock on the read-option very well. He understands this wing t offense and gives Vicksburg a very great chance to compete against the other great schools they will face in 5A. Ronnie also does a great job of putting the ball in a great position on the jump play. After a few long runs by their RBs he just needs to complete one pass for a touchdown. His job is never that hard with the offense they have. The running game will be his best friend.
DeCorey Knight, 5-9 175, ATH, 2025
DeCorey is expected to help their offense a lot this year. He is very fast and knows how to create a winning atmosphere when he touches the field. He is expected to he all over the place for the Gators next season. He can play slot or tote the ball on offense. On defense, he can help out at the defensive back position too. He doesn’t have any film out yet, but this athletic kid is one you will want to keep up with.
Caleb Bryant Caleb Bryant 6'3" | 245 lbs | DL Vicksburg | 2023 State MS , 6-3 250, DE, 2023
Caleb will be a major force on the Gator defense next season. There is no secret who this guy is. I don’t have to go on and on about what he will bring to their defense. He is one of the top players in the state and has been selected as a Percy’s Phenom 15 player. His resume speaks for him. This kid will be a major force in the pass rush and in the running game.
DeMarcus Johnson, 6-0 270, DT, 2024
Johnson is a plug in the middle of the Vicksburg defense. He is the heart of the tenacity they bring to the table every Friday night. He isn’t an easy guy to block and does not allow offensive lineman to get to the next level on his LBs. He knows how to stay low and keeps his hands moving when he releases off the line. He will be a guy that makes a difference in the Gator defense. He had 10 sacks last season and 72 tackles.
Walleke Curry, 6-0 190, LB, 2023
Walleke had 90 tackles last season. He also added on four sacks and one interception. He is a true general on the defensive side for the Gators. He doesn’t mind sticking his nose in the midst of action to make a play. He is also a guy who can play sideline to sideline very well. Look for him to make a lot of plays this season again. I wouldn’t be surprised if he found a way to make 100 tackles this season.
Kellen Washington, 6-0 230, DE, 2023
Washington was another big asset to the Gator defense last season. He had 8 sacks and 55 tackles to go along with it. He has some nice size and makes it hard for a lot of lineman to block him. He is a major force in their rush defense and does a great job on the other side of Bryant. Don’t be surprised if he finds a way to get 10 sacks this year.
Jeleel Fleming, 6-3 190, FS, 2023
Jeleel has been picking up a lot of attention and more will come this season. He had 10 interceptions last year. He is a power 5 safety and his impact on the Gator defense makes them so much better. He plays the middle of the field like a principal watching a school hallway. He sees everything and if you slip then you are bound to be in trouble. He attacks the ball very well. He is not one of those safeties that you see a lot on the high school level. He is a mean guy when the ball is in the air. He turns into a receiver. He is already built like a college safety so he uses that frame to come up big in their rush defense as well. Fleming doesn’t mind coming up laying the wood. I’m pretty sure the Gator LB core can appreciate that.
Nicholas Mickey Nicholas Mickey 5'11" | 170 lbs | DB Vicksburg | 2023 MS , 5-11 170, DB, 2023
Nick has great coverage techniques. He uses his hands well in the press. He has a great back pedal. He doesn’t get out of position when the ball is in the air. All those things are just fine for a DB to have. The special thing about Mickey is his tackling ability. This kid loves to stick his nose right in the heart of other people’s business on the field. He makes good solid tackles like he is 6-3 225. Go watch his film and you can see where even against West Point he was making plays against their running game. That is saying a lot for a guy who is 170. Nicholas will bring a great advantage to Gator secondary this season.
JD Kelly JD Kelly 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Vicksburg | 2023 State MS , 6-1 185, DB, 2023
JD Kelly JD Kelly 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Vicksburg | 2023 State MS is a big corner that will help the Gator secondary a lot this year. He is long and can be able to help against taller receivers. He has great ball skills and knows how to break on the ball without getting too many pass interferences. He also doesn’t mind making tackles in the run game for the Gators.
Keegan Ware, 5-11 170, DB, 2024
Keegan is another guy in the Gator secondary that doesn’t mind hitting. He is a very big help on their defensive side. He can cover and he can help out in their rush defense. Keegan also gets a chance to do some things you don’t see a lot on the high school level. His coaches don’t mind sending him on blitzes. From his film you can see he times those blitzes very well. Keegan does a great job of exploding on contact. He rolls his hips and gets ball carriers down when he hits them.
Ke’arris Gilliam, 6-1 175, DB, 2023
Gilliam can play his position to the t. He does a nice job of getting a good backpedal. He breaks on the ball very well. The first play of his junior film he takes one to the house off of an out route. He does a very good job of playing the receiver and not worrying about what is happening in the backfield. Gilliam has a great set of hands. He isn’t looking to just knock the ball down. He is looking for the pick 6. Even though he looks for big plays he knows when to be disciplined and just knock the ball down. He also knows how to be graceful with his long frame. He can reach around the receiver and knock the ball down. It’s going to be a fun year around Vicksburg.
