Prep Redzone Oklahoma is all about team camps over the next ten days! We got our camp tour started on Wednesday evening in Choctaw (check out our camp report RIGHT HERE) and we continued in Verdigris on Thursday and Friday morning. The Cardinals hosted Beggs, Catoosa, Coweta, Hilldale, Kiefer, Pryor, Bristow, and Wagoner. We got a good look at some prospects that we know plenty about, as well as some prospects that we were seeing for the first time and even a few new names that have some potential to be breakout players this fall. In this post, we take a look at some of the top names that stood out to us on a sunny Friday morning. Stay tuned to Prep Redzone Oklahoma next week as we tour Rejoice Christian team camp.
Jayden Salyer – 2024 OL – Catoosa
Friday morning we were able to get some good weather with the sun out and got to watch some newcomers that didn’t get to play last season. Salyer was injured last year and wasn’t able to play this past season. Salyer didn’t disappoint playing on the offensive line. Salyer is a powerlifter that squats 530 pounds with great form. He moves well for his size which helps to get up to the second level. Salyer was able to move guys around today which helped with the run game. He has a good pass pro and doesn’t lunge and has great hips. Salyer plays with an edge out on the line and likes to finish his blocks.
Mason Mittasch Mason Mittasch 5'8" | 180 lbs | RB Verdigris | 2023 OK – 2023 RB – Verdigris
The talented 2023 class out in Verdigris is deep. The Cardinals return several players on both sides of the ball and today Mittasch looked primed and ready to go at running back. Mittasch took advantage of what was given to him today and he made the most out of it. He has good vision and what I like about watching him is all it takes is for a small crease to show and he hits the hole quickly. He has put in work this offseason and you can tell he is starting to hit his stride out there on the field. He showed great cuts today and moves well in tight spaces.
Darieon Johnson Darieon Johnson 5'11" | 205 lbs | LB Beggs | 2023 State OK – 2023 RB/LB – Beggs
Talk about a talented class, next on our list is another player for the Demons, Darieon Johnson Darieon Johnson 5'11" | 205 lbs | LB Beggs | 2023 State OK . Johnson plays both outside linebacker and running back at Beggs. I enjoyed watching him fly to the ball on numerous occasions. It didn’t matter if the play was away from him or right at him he rallied to the ball. He chased down toss sweeps and screens from his inside, or outside, position. He uses his hands well to get off blocks quickly and likes to play physically. On the offensive side of the ball, he is a physical back that will lower his shoulder to gain the extra yard or sidestep a defender to keep the play going. Johnson looks to be a player that loves the physicality at both positions.
Kale Charboneau – 2025 QB – Wagoner
We will keep this list going with another talented group of players but this time for the Wagoner Bulldogs, Kale Charboneau. For both days that I watched, Charboneau didn’t make many mistakes. He throws a good deep ball and is consistent with his throws. He shows good footwork in the pocket and moves well versus the rush. Not only can Charboneau toss the ball around but he runs the ball too. He doesn’t back down from a defender about to tackle him and runs between the tackles well. I knew this kid was mentally tough when I saw him get reps on the defensive side of the ball which you don’t see much of any more from a quarterback. This 2025 class keeps getting deeper and deeper of Oklahoma ballers.
Gabe Rodriguez Gabe Rodriguez 5'11" | ATH Wagoner | 2023 State OK – 2023 Athlete – Wagoner
This team camp was great to attend to be able to see all of these athletes out on one field. Another talented player that I was able to watch today was Rodriguez from the Bulldogs. Rodriguez made plays on both sides of the ball but was impressive watching him run the alley to the flats with force. Rodriguez can play the run from the safety position and brings the hammer when he gets to the ball carrier. His coverage skills in the secondary were good as he could move well and could get over the top to help make plays. On the offensive side of the ball, Rodriguez made some plays catching the ball out of the backfield or downfield for large gains.
Carson Flanary – 2023 Defensive End – Coweta
These past few seasons the Coweta Tigers have produced some good talent at numerous positions all over the field. The next prospect is 2023 Carson Flanary and he plays defensive end for the Tigers. Playing defensive end, you have to possess some skills that are different from other positions. You have to get off the edge in rushing the quarterback, maintain the edge, get off blocks and peel off from rushing the quarterback to cover the flat. From time to time, Flanary is called on to pick up a running back out of the backfield that is on a swing route. He has a good change of direction and footwork to be able to do this along with other multiple tasks.
Yale Gray – 2023 OL – Verdigris
Now it’s time to take a look at an offensive lineman for the Cardinals, left tackle, Yale Gray. Gray started for the Cardinals last season and is returning as one of the starters for the Cardinals for the 2022 season. On day two of team camp, the Cardinals did a good job running the ball behind the offensive line. Gray does a good job getting up to the second level and sealing off the inside linebackers. On any outside run, he has a good reach step to help the ball carrier get to the edge with his block. Gray has a good kick step on his pass pro and locks up with most defensive ends he faced Friday morning. I look to Gray and his other offensive lineman this year to get it going for the Cardinals upfront in the trenches.
Nathan Maledon – 2023 Safety – Coweta
There are several players for the Coweta Tigers that you should take a look at this upcoming season. One of those players is Nathan Maledon who plays safety for the Tigers. Maledon made several plays in the secondary as he looks to help lead the Tigers for the 2022 season along with Mason Ford Mason Ford 5'11" | DB Coweta | 2023 State OK . He looked fluid in his coverages and helped make plays over the top by being in the right position. He looks good coming downhill and fitting up in the run game when he has to. Maledon made several plays throughout camp and was consistent both days.
