New players emerged in the latest update, and we are happy to rank a number of different “under the radar” linebackers in South Georgia. Here are some new South Georgia linebacker additions to the latest 2023 Prep Redzone Georgia Rankings.
Elijah Colvin Elijah Colvin 6'1" | 220 lbs | LB Lowndes | 2023 State GA – Lowndes
A quick, hard-hitting linebacker, Colvin is the definition of a tough, South Georgia linebacker. He may not have lit up the stat sheet last year as a junior, making 49 tackles and and 6 TFLs, but when he makes a play, the entire stadium notices. He’s a versatile linebacker who can line up in different positions and can make a play in the backfield. If the offense misses an assignment and doesn’t get a hand on him, he’s going to leave a bruise on the ball carrier. He has size and muscle at 6-foot-1 220-pounds, and he moves really well at that size. He’s a physical tackler and plays with passion. He shows instincts, can take on blocks, and plays for one of the top programs across Georgia. His recruitment has yet to take off, but he could be close to earned some smaller offers at some point in the offseason.
Julian Fox Julian Fox 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB Crisp County | 2023 State GA – Crisp County
A tackling machine in South Georgia, Fox appears to be the next big-time linebacker to come out of Crisp County. The 6-foot-1 200-pounder tackled everything in sight last fall, making 148 tackles and 12 TFLs to go along with 4 sacks. He’s instinctive and constantly moving pre-snap, which makes it hard for offensive linemen to get a hand on him. He gets into the backfield in a hurry and can really blow up a play before it gets started. He’s a true down-hill linebacker who lives in the backfield. He’s great on the blitz and knows how to sneak through the line of scrimmage. He’s a good form tackler and made around 11 tackles per game. He looks like a D1 prospect on film and has seen a new offer from Western Kentucky come his way. He’s one of the most productive linebackers in all of South Georgia and will be a tackling machine once again as a senior this fall.
Detravious Laney Detravious Laney 5'9" | 180 lbs | LB Terrell County | 2023 State GA – Terrell County
One of the more productive linebackers in South West Georgia, the 6-foot-0 190-pound outside linebacker had an extremely productive season as a junior, making 87 total tackles through 8 games along with with 12.5 TFLs and one sacks. He’s not the biggest or fastest linebacker in South Georgia, but he has great instincts, he’s strong, has above-average speed, and he’s a great all-around defensive player. Laney also forced three fumbles and recovered three more, proving to be a true playmaker with a nose for the football. He’s a strong tackler, and he has that South Georgia toughness to his game, He was as productive as it gets for any defender in the region and is expected to have another monster season as a senior if he continues to develop and add more weight in the off-season. After a great 2021 season, it was easy to rank him among the best in South Georgia for the 2023 class.
