Then after that some might argue that a pass rusher or a lockdown cornerback would be second, but most of the time a dominant offensive tackle is the second priority for any team to build an offensive around (along with the quarterback). Through the years you have seen the notion of the distinction of the difference between a “left” and “right” tackle, but now a days if you are able to plug in an athletic big bodied athlete on ether the left or right side then that’s all that matters. To have a offensive tackle have quick feet to reach second level in the run game and a strong lower body to anchor in pass protection that is sight for sore eyes.
Lets take a look at a couple 2023 offensive tackles from the state of Louisiana:
Hayden Christman Hayden Christman 6'6" | 300 lbs | OL Tioga | 2023 State LA 6-7 305 Tioga High School (Tioga, LA.)
A physical imposing offensive lineman, and also adds versatility with having the ability to play center as well. He shows to have a strong lower body where he shows to unlock his hips and drive through defenders in the run game. He is patient in pass protection, knows how to effectively move his feet for his size and mirror the defender.
Caden Jones Caden Jones 6'7" | 255 lbs | OL De La Salle | 2023 State LA 6-8 290 De La Salle High School (New Orleans, LA.)
A powerful offensive tackle that moves well in space with good body control which allows him to seal off second level defender and adjust to where he can create a running lane. He demonstrates to have heavy hands when he strikes a defender and getting that “knock back” effect when he strikes. The way he moves his feet in pass protection is subtle, precise and knows where to hit his landmarks in his pass sets.
Jamall Franklin Jr. Jamall Franklin Jr. 6'8" | 370 lbs | OL Scotlandville | 2023 State LA Jr. 6-8 370 Scotlandville High School (Baton Rouge, LA.)
A versatile massive prospect on the offensive line, showing the ability to play on the inside at offensive guard as well. Shows a physical demeanor in the run game with the ability to engage in defenders and not get over extended when latching on to them. His footwork in pass protection is smooth, shows to be able to readjust the depth of his sets to correspond with the defender.
Tyler Kimble Tyler Kimble 6'5" | 280 lbs | OL Denham Springs | 2023 State LA 6-5 270 Denham Springs High School (Denham Springs, LA.)
He really shows off his athleticism when blocking on the perimeter, showing the ability to reach the outside shoulder of the defender and turn him and pin him inside. The way he can reach second level with ease and with such body control that he can continue on his path and pick up linebackers and even defensive backs with ease while finishing blocks.
Matthew Broussard Matthew Broussard 6'4" | 270 lbs | OL E.D. White | 2023 State LA 6-4 260 E.D. White Catholic High School (Thibodaux, LA.)
An athletic offensive tackle that is playing in a run heavy scheme at his school, showing the ability to come off the line of scrimmage with a quick first step and consistent hand placement to lock on and engage defenders. He has great awareness to adjust his route to second level defenders with the ability to dip shoulders and square up on the defender and drive them out.
