Continue ReadingHeading into the summer we take a quick look at one of Oregon’s all-time great football communities and their return to prominence. I recently released a 6A Oregon Top 25 where I had the Indians at #12. This could very well change as the season draws near.
What head coach Dave Heuberger has done at Roseburg, after the turnaround he helped facilitate at Springfield HS, leaves no doubt he is one of Oregon’s top coaches. The reigning 6A coach of the year helped the Indians go (9-2) last season after losing 11 straight dating back two seasons prior.
As most know Roseburg was a traditional power back in the day, winning multiple state titles in the mid 90’s and producing maybe Oregon’s best team ever in 1996. Last year they were tripped up by a surprising Summit team in the 2nd round of the playoffs after losing the conference title game to Sheldon 49-47.
RHS does graduate a talented group of seniors, including offensive POY Colton Marsters, two-way 1st team all conference athlete Logan Klopfenstein, and one of the state’s fastest and most talented kids in Landyn Dupper.
That said as they do return one of Oregon’s most experienced lines, led by returning SWC Defensive Player of the Year Tiger Black Tiger Black 6'3" | 265 lbs | DL Roseburg | 2023 State OR . He projects at the division 1 level being offered by the likes of Air Force and Army thus far with more to come. He will combo his talents on the offensive front with another one of the state’s top line recruits in 6-4 275-pound Daniel Thomas Daniel Thomas 6'4" | 275 lbs | OL Douglas | 2023 State OR . Fellow returning starters Kyler Mills 6-2 275 and all conference center James Coleman sure up the O line.
Heuberger is one of the best offensive minds in the region and this will be put to the test once again, graduating a handful of 1st team all-conference skill kids. Look for him to feature one of Oregon’s top returning 24’s in RB Cayden Eckel Cayden Eckel 5'8" | 170 lbs | RB Roseburg | 2024 State OR who was lights out all season, earning 1st team all-conference accolades as a sophomore. Expect him to touch the ball a minimum of 20 times a game, especially with the talented line they have returning.
There are question marks on the defense. Black is the best player they have had come through the school since Zack Mandera, now at Portland St. Former Duck QB and Summit coach Tony Graziani said it well last season, “Black was hands down the best player we faced all year.” Also expect talented 6-2 DB Eli Jacobs to be one of the best in the SWC defensively after leading the conference in picks last season.
In summary I can’t say enough good things about Heuberger and what Roseburg football means. He took what had been one of the worst 5A programs in Oregon to the state title game while at Springfield, and has the Indians back in the mix as a conference title contender and potential top 10 team. We will hear a lot more about other up and coming athletes as the season gets closer.
