The athletes class is beginning to take shape in 2024 with so many guys coming off big seasons. Athlete is always a hard position to project to the next level; most these guys are just so talented on both sides of the ball. Today we dive into the new athletes added to our 2024 rankings this May.
[player_tooltip player_id="344052" first="Kahnen" last="Daniels"] | West Point
Playing quarterback for the run heavy West Point Green Wave, [player_tooltip player_id="344052" first="Kahnen" last="Daniels"] is one of the many explosive ball carriers for the powerhouse offense. Daniels stands at 6’1" 185 and is always one of the best athletes on the field. He is a playmaker with the ball in his hands capable of making defenders miss in the open field. Daniels has a thicker build that helps him shed arm tackles left and right on his way to the end zone. His speed is quite impressive, showing that he can change gears and go when a hole opens up. When asked to pass, Daniels has a pretty big arm to him and can get the ball to his wide outs in space. Whether he plays running back, wide receiver, or defensive back at the next level, Daniels is a flat out football player.
[player_tooltip player_id="314467" first="Brycen" last="Johnson"] | Greene County
Greene County’s [player_tooltip player_id="314467" first="Brycen" last="Johnson"] joins our recent rankings after a huge sophomore campaign, totaling 394 yards and 5 TDs receiving, 8 interceptions, 10 pass break ups, and over 100 total tackles on the year. The two way player stands at 6’0" 165 and has some special ball skills to him. While Johnson is a good player on offense, he is a GREAT player on defense. Johnson does a great job at anticipating where the quarterback is going to throw the ball and breaks on the route quickly. His ball skills help him to go up over top WRs to steal the ball from the air before the wide out can react. Johnson is also a physical player in the run game who isn’t afraid to make open field tackles. Really talented prospect in the 2024 class in store for a big junior season.
[player_tooltip player_id="344083" first="SanFrisco" last="Magee"] | McComb
A 6’2" 190 safety/wide out from McComb, [player_tooltip player_id="344083" first="SanFrisco" last="Magee"] is an intriguing addition to the rankings. Magee has the length that college coaches love to see on both sides of the ball. He has great ball skills and can make some outstanding leaping grabs over defenders. Magee is a smooth glider as a runner and can stretch the field as a receiver. On the defensive side of the ball, he has good range and is a hard hitter. The way that Magee plays the game is fun to watch. This is the kind of athlete that plays with a big time chip on his shoulder and wants to dominate every single snap he is in. Looking forward to watching his junior season and starting to see the college interest add up.
[player_tooltip player_id="286476" first="Elijah" last="Spratt"] | Amory
An electric punt returner and versatile defensive back, Amory’s [player_tooltip player_id="286476" first="Elijah" last="Spratt"] had a huge season last year as a sophomore. The 5’10" 165 has great length in his arms and knows how to play the ball in the air. Spratt plays all over the secondary, but shows his best tape at safety. That is not saying he can’t play corner well either though! Spratt has great ball skills and can give opposing team’s passing games fits due to his range. His dynamic athleticism is displayed in full on special teams. If you’re kicking to this guy, you are praying he doesn’t bust it for a touchdown. Spratt has great vision with the ball in his hands and can see running lanes open before they appear. Really talented player who is due for a massive junior year.
[player_tooltip player_id="346336" first="Michael" last="Johnson"] | South Panola
South Panola’s [player_tooltip player_id="346336" first="Michael" last="Johnson"] was one of the most interesting prospects of the new additions. The 6’3" 200 pound athlete spent time at quarterback, wide receiver, and safety last season. Johnson is also a stand out baseball player for South Panola and looks to be drawing college interest there as well. As a football player, there is a lot to like about him. With his length and speed in the open field, Johnson can play a variety of positions at the next level. Johnson has good hands and tracks the ball well over his shoulder, maybe coming from some of his baseball background. At quarterback, Johnson was used on a lot of designed runs and made people miss in space, but also had the strength to run straight through them. Excited to see what he is playing this year; a whole lot of untapped potential here with 2 years left to develop.
[player_tooltip player_id="346332" first="Amarion" last="Fortenberry"] | Columbia
A physical corner and speedy running back, Columbia’s [player_tooltip player_id="346332" first="Amarion" last="Fortenberry"] is another really interesting talent we came across. Contrary to the opinion that corners don’t want anything to do with contact, Fortenberry excels as a tackler in the open field. The rising junior loves to come downhill and deliver big blows to ball carriers who try to bounce the play outside. Fortenberry has smooth hips and good speed, showing that he can run with most receivers well downfield. As a running back, he has good quickness and is best on outside runs that allow him to use his speed on the sideline. The state champion will look to replicate his production last season in the upcoming 2022 season.
[player_tooltip player_id="346404" first="Coby" last="Owens"] | Saltillo
A three sport athlete in football, basketball, and track, Saltillo’s [player_tooltip player_id="346404" first="Coby" last="Owens"] is a versatile player used all over the field. Owens primarily plays wide out and linebacker, but also takes snaps at running back on occasion. The rising junior stands at 6’1" 200 and has a great frame to him for both sides of the ball. While Owens produces on offense, it is hard not to love his future as a linebacker at the next level. Owens runs well in space and loves contact. He does a good job at using his length to get off of blocks and tackles well with good form. A lot of things to like about Owens future upside.
[player_tooltip player_id="314797" first="Keenan" last="Franks"] | Greene County
An electric playmaker with the ball in his hands, Greene County adds another athlete to our rankings, this time in [player_tooltip player_id="314797" first="Keenan" last="Franks"]. Franks is a running back with a lot of versatility listed at 5’9" 170. After watching his sophomore season and recent spring game, it is hard not to love this guys potential at either running back or slot receiver. Franks is a quick and agile back with good hands out of the backfield. He sees holes well and can change gears to race to the end zone. Franks also has soft hands out of the backfield and in the slot, making him a weapon all over the field. As good as he looked in the spring game this year, it is hard not to think Franks is due for a massive junior year.
[player_tooltip player_id="287553" first="Micah" last="Stallworth"] | Jackson Prep
A state track qualifier, [player_tooltip player_id="287553" first="Micah" last="Stallworth"] finds a spot in our rankings after a productive sophomore season and good spring. Stallworth stands at 5’11" 185 and plays both corner and running back. While Stallworth has carried the ball in limited reps as a sophomore, his role should grow entering this season. Stallworth flashed at corner last year though, showing aggressive instincts and solid play in zone coverage. Stallworth has a high football IQ and can see routes develop before receivers get there. He shows good ball skills and is a very talented tackler in the open field, flashing on special teams as well. Excited to see how far he goes this season with his development all around.
