Continue ReadingIt’s Easter Weekend, so we’re more than halfway through the month of April. Believe it or not, it’s been 4-1/2 months since the state championship games in late November. We’re about 3 months away from the start of preseason camps for most high school teams. Here are 5 prospects (Part 1) who are winning the off-season:
Mason Espinda-McChriston Mason Espinda-McChriston 6'2" | 175 lbs | ATH Bernalillo | 2024 State NM -McChriston, Bernalillo: If you watched the video from last Sunday’s 7×7 jamboree, you saw Espinda-McChriston put on show with several leaping catches. He had 17 receptions for 281 yards and 2 TD in 2021. Leading receiver Tristen Ludi-Herrera Tristen Ludi-Herrera 5'11" | 150 lbs | WR Bernalillo | 2022 State NM (51 receptions) is graduating, so look for Espinda-McChriston to have a much larger role this coming season. He should be Bernalillo‘s leading WR in 2022.
Brody Whitaker Brody Whitaker 5'11" | 235 lbs | LB Albuquerque Academy | 2024 State NM , Albuquerque Academy: Already one of the state’s top 2024 prospects, Whitaker hasn’t stopped working to improve. He was superb at a recent lineman camp in Denver and is constantly setting personal records in the weight room. And he still has 2 more years of high school football ahead of him. By this time next year, Whitaker should be attracting plenty of interest from colleges.
Evan Wysong Evan Wysong 5'10" | 165 lbs | QB Cleveland | 2023 State NM , Cleveland: Wysong is already well known as the dynamic dual threat quarterback for Cleveland’s undefeated Class 6A championship team in 2021. But what some people may not realize is Wysong is FAST (yeah, just like older brother Luke). Evan just ran 100 meters in less than 11 seconds (10.98) and 200 meters in 22.4 seconds at a recent track meet. Top contender for the ‘King of Speed’ crown we’ll award in June following the state track & field meet.
Andre Alvarado, Hobbs: Alvarado is quickly becoming one of the most underrated players in the state. He made the long trip from Hobbs to Denver in late March for a linemen camp and impressed onlookers with his skills. Then he journeyed to Sul Ross State University for an official visit on Junior Day last weekend. SRSU offered in February. And he’s a monster in the weight room. He’ll be one of the top defensive linemen in the state this season.
Izaiah Gonzalez Izaiah Gonzalez 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL Centennial | 2023 State NM , Centennial: The Hawks will have one of the best offensive lines in the state in 2022 and the 6-foot-3, 280-pound Gonzalez is a major reason why along with Khalif Arenas Khalif Arenas 6'1" | 290 lbs | OL Centennial | 2023 State NM and others. He’s a member of Centennial’s 1,000-pound club in the weight room and been invited to take visits to New Mexico State ad Eastern New Mexico. He earned Second-Team All-State honors in 2021.
