Ronnie Lott once said, “It didn’t matter where I played, I just wanted to play well.” These five prospects share that mindset with the all-time great. As long as they’re somewhere on your defense, they’re going to make plays.
Included in this article is a Division 1-caliber safety who’s being overlooked, a ’need to know about’ linebacker in Amarillo, and a crafty cornerback in Clute.
SS Kam Phoenix — 6’1″ 175 / Spring Westfield HS — @KameronPhoenix
Phoenix is a terrorizing downhill safety who closes in a hurry. You want him patrolling the middle of the field and quarterbacking your defense. Has the speed, ball skills, and hit stick ability you want in a strong safety. What makes him special, aside from the above-mentioned traits, is his versatility. He’s not just your typical ‘in the box’ strong safety. He’s the kind of player who can make a Day 1 difference for your defense. Plays for the perennial power Mustangs, so you’d think he has a huge following. Sort of flying under the radar. Offer him today.

CB Croix Rivera — 5’11” 175 / Brazoswood HS — @RiveraCroix1k
Rivera has game-breaking speed. He’s a ‘plant and drive’ corner who gets downhill to make plays on the football in a hurry. Excels while in trail technique, and does a nice job of always getting his head around to locate the ball. What I like most about him is that he’s got oily hips and can transition from his backpedal smoothly and run with anyone down the field. Keep an eye on the coastal town of Clute this season.

LB Evan Murray — 5’11″ 220 / Arlington Seguin HS — @Evan04s
Murray is a hard-nosed, downhill thumper who deserves more attention than he’s currently getting. He’s a leader for the Cougars’ defense, is always around the football, and maximizes his physical nature on every play to get the most out of every rep. He does an adequate job of getting through traffic to bring down ballcarriers, and will be a great addition to a small college program that’s looking for a winner to lead their defense.

LB Mason Gilbert — 6’0″ 200 / Amarillo Randall HS — @MasonGilbert_
Gilbert is always making a play for the Raiders. Great sideline-to-sideline speed is what sets him apart from so many others. He’s a hard hitter who utilizes great footwork and mobility to get to the football. The film is impressive, and this linebacker from the High Plains is sure to have a monster senior season.

LB Koda Canady — 6’3″ 195 / Jacksonville HS — @Koda_Canady
Explosive. Aggressive. Fluid. These three words come to mind when watching tape on Canady. He is a pass rusher who has a wicked first step and is always in the backfield. If you’re looking for a situational pass rusher who has the potential to transform a defense, Canady is your guy.
Received his first offer yesterday, from Division 2 Northwestern Oklahoma State.
