This article is dedicated to putting respect on West Michigan Football. Here we have teams from different divisions and different histories. We have 3 teams from the OK-Green, while we have 1 in the Blue. In this article, I’ll be pointing out four West Michigan programs that I expect to improve from last season, all with profound postseason potential.
Muskegon
I have extremely high expectations for Muskegon this season. I expect them to make a postseason run. They have PLAYERS. With [player_tooltip player_id="253303" first="Destin" last="Piggee"], [player_tooltip player_id="241282" first="Jake" last="Price"], [player_tooltip player_id="253304" first="M’khi" last="Guy"], [player_tooltip player_id="253306" first="Karl" last="Brooks"], [player_tooltip player_id="253307" first="Miguel" last="Botello"], and MANY others, I have an amazing feeling about Muskegon. I remember when I played at Seaholm, we all attended Veer Camp. Muskegon was always there, and everyone was always afraid of Muskegon. Well coached and well feared, you better bet Muskegon will be back. Although I have yet to watch them in person, I adore their offensive playbook, and... I’ll say it. I would bet Muskegon to represent West Michigan in the State Championship if I were a betting man.
Mona Shores
The thing about Mona Shores is they’re consistently elite. And with that, even a 2nd-round exit is a shocker for them. I still expect teams like Forest Hills Central and Caledonia to be great this season, but Mona Shores has so much young talent with some of the best coaches in the business. They have a great senior class with [player_tooltip player_id="243090" first="Sam" last="Wahlberg"], [player_tooltip player_id="243089" first="Dahmir" last="Farnum"], [player_tooltip player_id="243093" first="KeWaun" last="Farnum"], [player_tooltip player_id="243092" first="Jaylen" last="Vinton"], and others, but the QB position will be the most crucial. As long as (Jonathan Pittman?) works well, Mona Shores will find themselves at the top of D2 in 2022.
Grand Rapids Union
I’m rooting for Union more than any other team this year. Listen, they were on par with Pontiac a few years ago, and with 3rd-year Head Coach Don Fellows, they’ve already made strides, and I think they’ll continue to improve. QB [player_tooltip player_id="290737" first="Tommy" last="Stevens"] has been a bright spot for Union, sporting excellent athleticism which has caused headaches for opposing defenses. In addition, Union has many amazing up-and-comers with names like Synere Hobson, [player_tooltip player_id="298950" first="Keith" last="Griffen"], Grayson Fellows, and many others. Union fought tooth and nail with Mona Shores last season, and this coming season, I see a playoff appearance.
West Catholic*
Here’s the thing. I think West Catholic will be more or less on-par with what they were last season, but I think their seeding will improve, and they’ll win the OK-Blue with the amount of talent Unity Christian has lost. They have one of the most dominant running backs in the state with [player_tooltip player_id="159621" first="Timmy" last="Kloska"], with many other promising talent such as [player_tooltip player_id="253301" first="Chaz" last="Vida"], [player_tooltip player_id="286460" first="Elliot" last="Zainea"], and others. I expect West Catholic to have a good ol’ time in the playoffs, but it’s more than likely they’ll meet Catholic Central (CC) in the playoffs once more, and even with the talent CC loses, they’ll be favored against West Catholic. But I would argue that West Catholic will have a better chance against CC than last season.
