They won their opening playoff game over Marquette 37-6. The 2nd round was a tremendous test as they had to take on the DeWitt Panthers. Mount Pleasant competed for most of the game before DeWitt pulled away in the 4th quarter.
The Oilers do lose a few key seniors from last year but return receiver and cornerback Scooter Polk (Hudl). Polk is an outstanding competitor who makes plays on offense and defense. He has fluid hips at the cornerback position and can turn and run with any receiver he matches up with. They bring back running back Max Humphrey Max Humphrey 6'1" | 190 lbs | RB Mt. Pleasent | 2023 MI (Hudl). Humphrey has the speed to take the distance every time he touches the football. He will be one of the go-to players offensively in 2022 for the Oilers. I expect the Mount Pleasant coaching staff to get him the football early and often next year.
Week 3: 9/9 @Cadillac
Cadillac went 9-3 last season with all 3 of their losses coming to teams who made the playoffs. Cadillac has a great defensive back and running back in Keenan Suminski (Hudl). Suminski has the strength to break tackles. He shows good long speed and can create long touchdown runs. Mount Pleasant’s defense will need to be ready for Suminski’s big play ability. This will be a great non-league contest and one of the best games in the entire state of Michigan in week 3.
Week 4: 9/16: vs Traverse City Central
This will be a tough test early in the season for Mount Pleasant. Traverse City Central had a great year in 2021. Their only losses came to DeWitt in week 1 and to Warren De La Salle Collegiate in the division 2 state championship game. This will truly be a meeting of two proud football programs when Traverse City Central heads south to play Mount Pleasant next season.
Traverse City Central returns left tackle Anderson Farmer (Hudl). Getting a guy like Farmer back is huge for a team that has hopes of winning a state title next year. Farmer has the aggression and strength you want in a tackle and is always driving his feet until the whistle is blown. This has the makings to be a tremendous football game with several great players from both teams.
Week 8: 10/14 @Midland Dow
Midland Dow finished the 2021 season at 6-4. One of their losses was to Mount Pleasant by a score of 33-10. Dow has been one of the most consistent programs in the state of Michigan. They have qualified for the playoffs 9 years in a row. Mount Pleasant has won 3 out of the last 4 meetings in this series.
Mount Pleasant will face a great quarterback in Midland Dow’s Jack Bakus Jack Bakus 6'5" | 220 lbs | QB Midland Dow | 2023 MI (Hudl). Bakus lit up the stat sheet in 2021, throwing for 2,273 yards & 26 passing touchdowns. Bakus throws with great touch and accuracy. He has the ideal size for a quarterback at 6-5, 225 lbs. Bakus and Midland Dow will be excited to try to avenge last season’s defeat. I believe next year’s meeting will be closer than 2021.
