We polled the state of Kentucky the other day on Twitter to get our eyes on talent from Pikeville to Greenville and everywhere in between. We will day by day grind the tape on every tape we get as we want to continue to put Kentucky prospects on the map regardless where they are. With tonight’s film session I, we evaluated six prospects from Raceland to Owensboro and many destinations in between. Check these incoming seniors out!
Korrey Mattingly II | Defensive Back | Louisville Male | 2023
Korrey shows off a ton of strong athleticism when he flies to the football out of nowhere. He can cover a significant island of the second level of the field and will come up out of nowhere on tape with his big motor he plays with. He shows a good bend at the knees with his backpedal as I would love to see him develop more traction into his senior season. He makes great contact with the ball carrier which is exactly what you want out of your secondary and with a wrestling background as a 3-time All-Stater. Not the biggest kid I have ever seen on tape, but plays with a great amount of grit to be a solid small school prospect.
Jayson Coburn Jayson Coburn 6'3" | 175 lbs | QB Berea | 2022 KY | Quarterback | Berea Independent | 2023
Even as a quarterback prospect that can extend plenty of plays with his legs, Jayson has a very calm demeanor inside the pocket and you can read that from a mile away. He has some excellent ball placement skills to go along with especially with his deeper routes. The biggest thing I love about this kid is how patient he is looking for the best throw available and will direct his receivers to the best spot he can read with his vision. Jayson has very sound mechanics and a great feel for the position. In my eyes, he’s certainly a scholarship level QB prospect that see more attention in the coming months from college programs.
Cameron Turner | Defensive Tackle | Nelson County | 2023
Cameron started off his tape with just the ultimate physicality. One of the biggest strengths I see on his tape is his length. He tops out at 5’11 but his reach especially as a defensive tackle, allows him to gather more pull when shedding off the o-line in the trenches with a swim move and can extend longer than some defensive linemen his size to pull his defender to the turf. Cameron shows off some solid versatility, as his reach inside on first contact is high and he can extend outside that inside zone if the linebackers cannot catch him on their first contact. The downhill leverage he is able to create make me very excited for his senior season at Nelson County.
Ben Taylor | Defensive Line | Raceland-Worthington | 2023
The right-handed chop move Ben uses has been the most effective move I have seen yet in tonight’s film session. I would love to see him be able to swing that arm with both hands by the end of this offseason, as when he added that plus solid burst out of his stance that is when he was the most effective in the backfield. He does a solid job of hand fighting with the linemen to draw him away from the QB’s eye and then leads the QB to try to run inside that lane that he’s able to stop with ease. Ben led the state of Kentucky in early September in sacks in the 2021 season, and with his instincts and vision on catching the QB when he steps up in the pocket, I think this kid could be a leader in that category yet again in 2022.
Cam Santiago | Athlete | Bourbon County | 2023
Cam has some soft hands that made some high traffic catches that were fun to watch on tape early in his film. He shows off a great router runner and just has a great knack for finding the football. This young man is hungry for the football, as he has that hand-toss that I love watching kids throw up showing the eagerness that A) they want the football and B) when Cam throws it up, he understands the window he has to make a play that will really push the ball upfield quick. I really do think this kid has underappreciated speed, as you can especially see when he climbs up a level at safety to connect with the ball carrier with great contact. He also has a great vertical for his size as well. I believe this young man has what it takes to play football at the next level, as he also well put together as far as his frame goes. Great 3.5 GPA as well.
Decker Renfrow | Wide Receiver | Daviess County | 2023
Decker caught my eyes very quickly with how great his ball-tracking ability was, and his ability to finish runs, despite having a significant advantage when it came to his burst on the defenders he faced. Decker has excellent balance in his footwork, whether that is changing his direction or keeping his feet inbounds. This young man has fantastic determination as I have rarely seen a kid put their 100% burst to the test just to get up field to be a lead blocker for his teammate seeking the end zone (just under 2 minutes in). His ability to get separation in multiple ways, is what makes him such an excellent athlete. He’s an excellent student too with a 4.0 and is a 3 sport athlete. I have to think this kid gets his first football offer at prospect camps this summer or before, because I think he will be a great one to watch blossom on the camp circuit in the state of Kentucky.
