Continue ReadingThe Dakotas has shown to be a hotbed for recruiting, particularly broke out this year. It certainly helps that there are two powerhouse FCS schools and a multitude of Division 2 schools close by for these athletes. The goal is to get kids to play college football, so this article will highlight the players that should be on the radar, but have not yet received any offers, but will as their Senior Season inches closer. Learn about them right here!
Rugby Ryken Rugby Ryken QB Yankton | 2023 State – Yankton
Ryken received some snaps for the Break-out Buck team as a Sophomore behind Center. He helped the explosive spread offense attack the opposing defenses. He had a lot of mobility when going through is reads. While extending plays with his legs, he kept his eyes downfield and made the biggest play possible. The most impressive thing I saw on film is his accuracy, whether he plants and throws or throws on the run, he drops dimes. His receivers didn’t have to make a lot of adjustments because his pass was always in the right spot on the play.
Tray Hettick Tray Hettick 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Herreid/Selby | 2023 State – Herreid- Selby
Hettick has had a lot of attention on Hudl, which surprises me that colleges haven’t been all over him yet. It is not to often that I find a pocket-passer in 9-man football. Hettick looks very comfortable in the pocket, never seems to be to anxious going through reads, even when pressured. He makes decision real quick and zips a nice, tight spiral to his receiver. He can arc a ball deep or zip a quick laser over the middle with precision on both. While being patient waiting for routes to develop, he never forces the issue on passes. He also possesses a great burst of speed if the defense sleeps on him and can rip off a huge gain at any moment.
Ryan Krog Ryan Krog QB Elkton-Lake Benton | 2023 State – Elkton- Lake Benton
Krog is the under-the-radar QB I’d like to see generate buzz this offseason. He stepped up for his small-town team as a sophomore taking running the offense for the Elks. He is a running RPO QB that can make big plays running the ball when he decides to pull and run. He can outrun most defenses with his speed, but also does not go down unless the defender earns the tackle. He has good vision and agility to get an even bigger gain on the play. When he throws, he darts a good ball down the field and hits his receiver in stride. He also puts good touch on the ball when he decides to put some arc on it.
Tate VanOtterLoo Tate VanOtterLoo QB Beresford | 2023 State – Beresford
VanOtterloo helped out in a huge way with the Watchdog Cinderella season this year. In their RPO offense, he did a great job on his reads and his fakes along with the timing of the quick passes. He really zipped a good ball in on the quick routes off the RPO and knew how long to hold the fake to read the defenders, and make the right decision. He sold both the run fakes and his pump fakes really well. He also had impressive arm strength on the deep ball along with the touch on it. He had good awareness of the situation on the down and distance. He extended plays with his legs and threw the ball where it needed to make the best play possible for the team, which won the games for them.
CJ Smith CJ Smith 5'11" | 160 lbs | QB Dell Rapids St Marys | 2023 State – Dell Rapids St. Mary’s
After a rocky regular season, Smith found his rhythm in the playoffs which led to a Cardinal State Title. In a run heavy offense, he did a great job selling his run fakes, then turning and making his reads to get a quick throw out for a big play. He was patient in letting his routes develop and throwing a good ball to his playmakers. He has good pocket presence and awareness to move around to make plays either run or passing. He can also be a good runner too. He has speed, but will run through a defender as well. He does a great job throwing on the run to either side of the field. He had good touch and zip on his ball with great accuracy.
Carson Yale Carson Yale 6'8" | QB Des Lacs-Burlington | 2023 – Des Lacs- Burlington
Yale lost his Junior Season to an injury. After watching his Sophomore tape, that should definitely not hold him back from any football interest at all. His tall 6’9″ frame is a huge difference maker to start, makes his reads a lot easier since there is no obstructing his vision. He is also a patient reading QB and throws a nice ball. His strength in his arm is impressive with his accuracy and velocity on it. When he throws a fastball type pass, it is right where it needs to be for his receiver to make a play. Whether dropping it in the bucket and squeezing it in a tight window, he throws the perfect ball. When he runs with the ball, he shows some good speed and just gets the important yards needed on the play.
