We are continuing to get through all the film that has been sent in over the last few weeks. The past two groups have all added some college interest or offers, and this one should be no different! Check out the players who stood out the most in this week’s Community Film Room!
Nick Thompson | 2023 RB
A standout back from Jefferson Davis High School, Nick Thompson stands at 5’9″ 185 with plenty of room to continue adding mass. Thompson plays in a wishbone offense that maximizes his skill set, the junior back totaled 93 carries for 700 yards and 12 scores. While he runs well in the open field, what stands out most about Thompson’s game is his ability to cut and change direction in space. Thompson has great contact balance as well and can break through arm tackles to stay on his feet. His ball carrier vision is also impressive. Thompson can see open running lanes before they truly open and hit them for a big gain. While he doesn’t get a ton of work in the pass game, he is still more than capable of catching out of the backfield and making plays after the catch. Very talented back who has seen a big leap in his development from sophomore to junior year. Although he currently lists no offers, watch for the 3A state champ to add interest as the spring continues.
Dontavis Lanier Dontavis Lanier 6'0" | 240 lbs | DL Newton | 2023 State MS | 2023 DL
Totaling 30 TFLs, 9 sacks, and 7 forced fumbles, Newton’s Dontavis Lanier Dontavis Lanier 6'0" | 240 lbs | DL Newton | 2023 State MS was one of the most productive defensive lineman in the state last season. At 6’0″ 270, Lanier has the frame to play on the interior at the next level. Lanier has an explosive first step and lacks much if any lower body stiffness to him. He uses his length well and can dominate guards and tackles using his raw power. While most defensive lineman struggle to move laterally when the ball carrier takes the ball outside, Lanier runs like a linebacker in the open field. As a pass rusher, Lanier has a variety of moves led by a very strong swim and rip. Lanier currently lists offers from Florida Valley, Hinds, and Northeast, but watch for this list to grow tremendously soon.
Jeremy Scott | 2024 WR
If you’re looking to add speed to your position group, look no further than Callaway’s Jeremy Scott. The sophomore exploded onto the scene last season and was one of the best young receivers in the Jackson area. Scott lines up out wide and can run the full route tree. He has loose hips that allow him to break in and out of his route with ease. Rarely do you see route runners as polished as he is at this age. Scott catches the ball well especially on deep routes and is a machine after the catch. There is no hesitation to his game; once he catches the ball, he is off to the races for a score. Scott can use his quickness to make defensive backs miss in space as well. Really like this guy’s talent and excited to see how he develops with two years left. Scott currently lists offers from Ole Miss, Mississippi State, Lane College, and Southern Miss.
Tylan McNichols Tylan McNichols 6'1" | 200 lbs | DB Newton County | 2024 State MS | 2024 ATH
A member of a talented secondary at Newton County, Tylan McNichols Tylan McNichols 6'1" | 200 lbs | DB Newton County | 2024 State MS stands at 6’1″ 203 and plays strong safety. In addition, he is also used at running back and wide out on the offensive side of the ball. McNichols is a fast and explosive athlete who can truly do it all. On offense, he can take hand offs, catch vertical routes and screens, and even lead block for big gains and scores. On defense, he is a big hitter who can also cover a third of the field. This is an overall incredibly talented football player. McNichols moves well and has great long speed. He can out run defenders on offense and meet ball carriers in the backfield on defense. McNichols is powerful as well and has a lot of natural strength to him. Love his upside on both sides of the ball, but he may end up being a special safety prospect. Somehow he has yet to receive his first offer, but expect a lot of schools to draw interest in due time.
Javonte Robinson | 2024 DL
An athletic end out of Gautier, Javonte Robinson is a hybrid defensive lineman who stands at 6’2″ 250. Robinson has the athleticism of a linebacker at the position of defensive end, giving him plenty of options for projecting him at the next level. Robinson has a quick and explosive first step off the ball and uses his hands well to be disruptive. He has well refined technique and does a great job at stacking and shedding blocks. Naturally strong and powerful, Robinson can drive back offensive lineman into the quarterback or ball carrier to create a big loss on the play. Against the run, Robinson does a great job at setting the edge. Overall, this is a young defensive lineman with a lot of promise. Watch for him to continue to develop and become a big time player for the Gautier defense, as well as draw college interest soon.
Jakeen Bowdery | 2023 LB
A downhill thumper out of North Panola, Jakeen Bowdery plays the linebacker position exactly how it is coached. Bowdery stands at 6’1″ 225 and looks like every bit of a college linebacker from a physical perspective. What stands out most about his game is his football intelligence. Bowdery does a great job at reading his keys and quickly triggering on the play, resulting in a loss of yardage for the opposing team. He moves well in space and shows that he can cover a curl zone as well. Bowdery is a great form tackler who wraps up the ball carrier every time he makes contact. His technique is well refined and he plays with great intensity. If the ball is going away from his side, Bowdery has great hustle and makes sure he is in on every tackle. Very intriguing linebacker who ought to add interest soon. Put up a great year of tape last season and should do the same thing as a senior.
