Continue ReadingAustin, Texas continues to be a hotspot for emerging quarterbacks. This year was no exception with 10 outstanding seniors making waves in their final high school season. These are just the top 10 quarterbacks in the Austin area.
1. Cade Klubnik Cade Klubnik 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Austin Westlake | 2022 State TX – Westlake High School (Austin, TX)
2021 Season: 3,251 passing yards, 43 passing touchdowns, 3 interceptions, 465 rushing yards, 12 rushing touchdowns
The Clemson signee did not disappoint in his senior season. Whether it was on the ground or through the air, Klubnik played already at another level. He was accurate, poised, focused, and had one of the highest football I.Q. in the state, if not the country. He helped lead Westlake to yet another state title, and even after dealing with an injury midseason, came back even stronger. Klubnik is easily the best quarterback in the Austin area, soon to maybe be the Clemson area.
2. Dior Bradfield Dior Bradfield 5'10" | 175 lbs | QB Weiss | 2022 State TX – Weiss High School (Pflugerville, TX)
2021 Season: 3,386 passing yards, 43 passing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 210 rushing yards, 2 rushing touchdowns
Putting up similar numbers to Klubnik, Bradfield also played an excellent senior season. Although he did not do as much on the ground, when he did, he showed his potential to be a great mobile quarterback. However, it was his passing game that makes him one of the best. He is accurate, especially on deep throws, and has excellent awareness of the field. Despite how tough the coverage is, Bradfield can sling it through the weeds to get a touchdown.
3. Darson Herman Darson Herman 6'3" | 225 lbs | QB Georgetown | 2022 State TX – Georgetown High School (Georgetown, TX)
2021 Season: 2,531 passing yards, 24 passing touchdowns, 6 interceptions, 1,141 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns
Herman is the definition of a mobile quarterback. He can tear up the field on the ground, and in the air. He can sling the ball deep downfield or run past the entire defense. Herman has an incredible arm with a lot of power. On top of that, he also has excellent awareness and can make great decisions under pressure. Despite coverage or the pocket collapsing, Herman knows exactly where to put the ball to make the play.
4. Josh Pell – Cedar Park High School (Cedar Park, TX)
2021 Season: 2,851 passing yards, 29 passing touchdowns, 17 interceptions, 506 rushing yards, 4 rushing touchdowns
Pell played his heart out the entirety of his senior season. He had great deep field accuracy and he can run the ball if he needs to. He has an excellent arm and can sling the ball with speed and accuracy. The major issue Pell dealt with was turnovers. He threw 17 interceptions in his senior season, but his decision-making, especially when under pressure can be improved upon. The potential for Pell is there, and with improvements, he can easily be amongst the best to come out of the Austin area.
5. Peyton Adams – East View High School (Georgetown, TX)
2021 Season: 2,045 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions, 168 rushing yards, 6 rushing touchdowns
Adams is an excellent quarterback under pressure. The defensive line can be in his face and he is still able to get his throws off. Throughout his tape, the pocket is constantly collapsing and he is able to escape to either gain some yards on the ground or heave the ball downfield. This really supports his accuracy and decision-making. On top of that, he can get throws off quickly especially for short passes called upon when the defense is blitzing.
6. Keller Jackson Keller Jackson 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Brentwood Christian School | 2022 TX – Brentwood Christian (Austin, TX)
2021 Season: 1,831 passing yards, 19 passing touchdowns, 4 interceptions, 809 rushing yards, 17 rushing touchdowns
Jackson is another good example of a mobile quarterback. Although the rushing stats speak for themselves, it does not speak to his throwing accuracy. This can only be shown on his tape, and he consistently made very difficult throws happen. Jackson is an entertaining quarterback to watch, but what is also impressive is his ability to be a team player. He can go down the field and make key blocks to set up a big play or score. He is not afraid to get into the thick of the defense and make a block. Jackson shares all the qualities of an excellent football player.
7. Timothy Caldwell – Del Valle High School (Del Valle, TX)
2021 Season: 1,956 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 10 interceptions
Much like the other quarterbacks, Caldwell’s tape also displayed his fantastic arm. he is able to consistently deliver deep passes while under pressure. Moreover, he can make passes happen when in difficult coverage or in difficult spots such as the corner of the endzone. He also does not hang onto the ball for too long, and always jets it out as soon as a receiver is open. Caldwell’s quick decision-making helped him truly display his potential in his senior season.
8. Cade Boyer – Lyndon B. Johnson High School (Johnson City, TX)
2021 Season: 1,802 passing yards, 21 passing touchdowns, 14 interceptions, 571 rushing yards, 7 rushing touchdowns
Given that Boyer also plays baseball, it is a given he has an excellent arm. On top of that, he also has the athleticism to outrun most of the defense. He has a lot of power behind each throw and he is often spot-on with his accuracy. The only issue he faced his senior season was the number of interceptions he threw. However, that is not a stain on his high school career at all as he is still impressive despite that statistic.
9. Troy Falgout – Seguin High School (Seguin, TX)
2021 Season: 1,851 passing yards, 15 passing touchdowns, 7 interceptions
10. Desmonde Thomas II – Vista Ridge High School (Cedar Park, TX)
2021 season: 1,309 passing yards, 13 passing touchdowns, 3 interceptions
Based on his tape from a few games, Thomas is incredibly athletic and agile. He is able to maneuver outside of the pocket and deliver on some big throws to give his team a fighting chance. He could stand to improve on his decision-making when throwing downfield, but all the makings of a great quarterback are there. With improvement, Thomas can be something special.
