Indiana’s Top Returning 2023 Running Backs
In this article:
Today, we dug deep in the film vault and analyzed Indiana’s top returning running backs in the 2023 class. The group is a deep one and should see some traction in the recruiting game relatively quickly. We have prospects featured from some of the top programs in the state and some hidden gems from smaller schools. Nonetheless, wherever they’re from, each kid has proven they can ball, that’s for certain. With that being said, here’s who you need to know.
Trey Gibson Trey Gibson 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Hobart | 2023 State IN , 6’, 190, Hobart
A do it all back with excellent change of direction. Gibson is sure-handed out of the backfield, will cut back when he spots defenders over pursuing and has plenty of speed to run away from the defense. His production speaks for itself, and to me, he’s easily a top-three back in the state.
Abram Stitt, 6′, 160, Delta
A true hidden gem with sneaky build-up speed and some serious shake. Stitt’s cuts are quick and subtle yet extremely effective. He even showed off a nasty spin move that left defenders in a trance.
Cody Mikulich Cody Mikulich 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB Bloomington North | 2023 State IN , 5’11″, 185, Bloomington North
A scatback that’s not afraid to lower his shoulder when the time calls for it. Cody’s mixture of speed and strength is not easy to find at the high school level & gave opponents fits in 2021. He’s a smooth route runner who navigates through traffic well and has a tough stiff arm.
Eli Carter Eli Carter 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Tipton | 2023 State IN , 5’9″, 170, Tipton
A smaller yet physical back that is a more than capable pass protector. Carter is comfortable working out of the slot as a receiving threat and can make defenders miss in 1 on 1 tackle situations. He’s shifty in the box as a runner and can bounce a hand-off off-tackle if there isn’t a firm edge set.
Camajay Griffin-Terrell, 5’8″, 160, West Side
A determined runner on contact who keeps his feet churning. Camajay can effortlessly stop and start when he spots a seam & quickly get to the perimeter. He’s an impact guy as a returner that can simply make something happen when a spark is needed.
Damon Sturm, 5’11”, 180, Terre Haute North Vigo
A patient runner that lets his pullers set up before bursting through a hole. Damon muscles his way through attempted tackles and will at times drag defenders with him. He’s a skilled pass catcher who can turn any quick game concept into an explosive play.
Carson Dunn Carson Dunn 5'10" | 190 lbs | ATH Fishers | 2023 State IN , 5’10″, 195, Fishers
A speedy prospect that has been clocked at a 4.48 laser time in the forty-yard dash. Dunn shows slick footwork and persistent body control on tape. His vision and balance are outstanding as he weaves in and out of traffic, gashing defenses for chunk plays.
Caleb Marcus Caleb Marcus 5'10" | 180 lbs | RB Brownsburg | 2023 State IN , 5’11″, 175, Brownsburg
Marcus’ versatility could be his number one trait, as he’s shown the potential to play wide receiver or running back at the next level. He’s a smooth mover with good speed in the open field. Nathan plays with fine knee bend and has visible short-area burst.
Derron Hazzard, 5’11″, 175, Riverton Parke
A tenacious back that looks to impose his will on opponents. Derron has the speed to split two defenders and is a major mismatch on linebackers in the passing game. He has an inkling for finding the endzone on the goal-line and will plow through tacklers when need be.
Drew Wheat Drew Wheat 5'10" | 160 lbs | RB Center Grove | 2023 State IN , 5’10″, 160, Center Grove
A powerful runner that generates most of his yards after contact. Wheat is a master improviser who can create himself when his blocks fail. This young man is elusive at the third level and will make you pay if you leave him 1 on 1 against safeties.
