I have seen a ton of great upperclassmen and a good amount of underclassmen new to high school varsity football. Based off the teams and games I’ve seen this season these are the top Houston area high school sophomore athletes.
#5 Atascocita Eagles Zion Brown QB So 6’0 170 lbs
Zion Brown had an outstanding season for the Atascocita Eagles quarterback. Halfway through the season quarterback Gavin Summers tore his acl and sophomore Zion had to fill his shoes. Zion is a pretty good passer, but his best feat was his speed. Every time I saw Zion play he was always running the ball himself and when he took off no one could catch him. Zion has the potential to be one of the best quarterbacks in the state by his senior year.
#26 Hightower Hurricanes Jeremy Payne RB, KR So 5’11 175 lbs
Jeremy is a sophomore running back with a great amount of speed and strength. There were a lot of plays where Jeremy was running with the ball and was able to dash by numerous of defenders for yards. Jeremy is a standout running back I’m excited to see his progress and potential in his junior and senior year of football. Jeremy currently has three college offers from; Southern Methodist University, Texas Southern University and Indiana University. Jeremy’s overall stats this season was 166 carries, 1,442 rushing yards and scored 10 touchdowns.
The Katy Tigers #7 Johnathan Hall Johnathan Hall 6'1" | 200 lbs | DB Katy | 2023 State TX FS, SS So 6’2 200 lbs
Johnathan Hall Johnathan Hall 6'1" | 200 lbs | DB Katy | 2023 State TX has a lot of stand out traits as a defensive free safety and strong safety. Johnathan was always aggressive, quick, decisive, and has great tackling form. From the games I have seen Johnathan as the safety moved up and would be the main person involved in the action. Johnathan despite being only a sophomore is already a college prospect having numerous college and universities offers from; Texas Tech University, Texas Christian University University of Arizona, Baylor University, Duke University, University of Houston, Purdue University and etc.
Katy Paetow Panthers #91 Loghan Thomas DE So 6’4 205 lbs
The Katy Paetow Panthers won The 5A divisional State Championship this season. Defensive end Loghan Thomas was a big contributor to this state title. Loghan speed, quickness and technique really stood out to me. Loghan would quickly get off the ball and make clutch plays in the backfield. Loghan is also strong enough to power through big offensive linemen, get off the block and get into backfield. Loghan currently has one college offer from Texas Tech Universitiy. Loghan’s overall stats this season was 43 overall tackles and 9 sack.
Clear Fall Knights #22 Payton Greer RB, WR So 5’9 170 lbs
The Clear Falls Knights offense had a lot of great and versatile athletes like Payton Greer. Payton filled the roles of running back, fullback and wide receiver. Payton was a hard worker and he was able to transition to any of these position efficiently. I think the Payton as a running back fit him the most. In the running back position Peyton was able to properly showcase his speed and tenacity powering through defensives fighting every single yard. Payton’s overall stats this season was 100 carries with 623 rushing yards, 17 receptions with 200 receiving yards and 8 overall touchdowns.
