We are certainly not done with our Class of 2022 rankings update. We move to the other side of the football to the linebacker position and give you 11 linebackers I would be taking a look at before we move into National Signing Day this upcoming week. This group has either just a couple offers, no offers, or are big time flyers under the radar. Plenty of names to check out below!
[player_tooltip player_id="93072" first="Gavin" last="Skinner"] | Rapid City Stevens (SD)
I can certainly tell Skinner added more speed to his resume in his 2021 season for the Raiders. This kid flies to the football very quickly and has a huge motor that can turn up field when the secondary gets beat. He also added a strong contact level in 2021, as he looked much more physical on his tackles from a year ago. Watching Skinner come off the edge, he quickly becomes a viable threat to punch the ball carrier in the backfield. He gets to the ball really quickly and I am quite surprised despite ranking in our Division II threshold that Gavin does not have an opportunity there yet. Hopefully we can see some added attention before groundhog’s day for this tough as nails linebacker.

[player_tooltip player_id="271489" first="Logan" last="Maras"] | West Central (SD)
Maras shows off a heck of a contact level and is a textbook tackler right on the nose. He has this pep in his step when he jumps off the snap that just flows nicely to get him separated to make a play on the ball carrier. I think he has good speed and can develop more this offseason, but this kid already has a fantastic frame for the next-level at 6’3 210 pounds. I think Maras could be one of the more slept on linebackers in this class as his wrap up tackling ability is fantastic yet to our knowledge he does not have any college football attention yet. There is a lot of talented linebackers around Sioux Falls, but this kid is worth a drive west on I-90.

[player_tooltip player_id="56505" first="Samuel" last="Burr"] | Mandan (ND)
If we are talking about motor, there might not be a bigger linebacker motor on this list than Sam Burr of Mandan. This kid has super active feet when dropping back into coverage and those hips do not stop churning for the duration of the play. Burr also has a hitstick in his arsenal and can level out his competition. Sam also has a bulldog mentality at fullback for the Braves, as he keeps his head forward and just grinds thru contact in his lower body to keep that big motor running. He brings also a lot of range at linebacker and can cover a massive piece of property on the field turf. Sam has an extended burst when he sees the open field to enter the backfield, as you can see he amps up when he has no traffic in his way. Burr is up to two offers now from North Dakota schools and would be a solid scholarship level player at the next level.

[player_tooltip player_id="151175" first="Matt" last="Treib"] | West Fargo Sheyenne (ND)
Sometimes you got to let the dog eat the whole meal, which is exactly what [player_tooltip player_id="151175" first="Matt" last="Treib"] did in the 11AA state championship game for the Mustangs. Treib has a strong lead step to jump into the inside of the football field where he shows a monster amount of physicality. This is kid I can tell now that I have watched him live plays with a heck of a lot of heart and is a determined competitor you know will give it his best on every play he’s on the field. Treib does a great job shedding off blocks at a quick speed which allows him to erupt into the opponent’s backfield with good ease. Matt is another linebacker in my eyes that’s hard hitting demeanor will lead him to success in playing scholarship level football next year, as he has a good amount of options locally.

[player_tooltip player_id="271491" first="Brandon" last="Havlovic"] | Tri-Valley (SD)
Stay tuned on this kid with me college coaches, as this kid might be one of the Dakota’s best kept secrets. Havlovic is the definition of a hammer to a nail with his strength of his contact to the ball carrier. Not only does he level out the ball carrier, his force that comes along with it can usually create the ball to pop loose. I would love to see more tape with how Havlovic does in coverage, but this kid doesn’t just have the contact, he has a long running motor that just refuses to quit. Why else do I love watching this kid? He does it on all three levels and is one of the first men done the field for the Mustangs. Haven’t been able to find this young man on social media, but I have a gut feeling he’s a hidden gem to watch before National Signing Day.

[player_tooltip player_id="151178" first="Jack" last="Paulsrud"] | Hillsboro-Central Valley (ND)
Paulsrud was a 1st half MVP for the Burros in the 11B state championship. Totaling over 120 total tackles on the season, Paulsrud doesn’t just stay in one spot, he’s super rangy with his his strong footwork is able to churn in the opposite direction quite quickly. Jack has a more instincts in his ability than he probably gets credit for as he reads the play so flawlessly and makes the right decision on when to connect on the ball. He shows good burst getting to the inside, but could use a little more development in his straight line speed compared to his knee-jerk reaction speed. A prospect that seems to be known on the recruiting trail, but does not hold an offer as of yet!
