While the first signing period had many of the state’s top prospects sign to play at the next level, many athletes elected to not sign until February. Some of them are still waiting for their first offer or chance to continue playing. At the quarterback position, some of Mississippi’s elite players this season still haven’t found a home yet. Let’s check out some of the best quarterbacks still available here in Mississippi.
Deandre Smith Deandre Smith 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Greenville Christian | 2022 State MS | Greenville Christian
If you haven’t heard of this guy yet, I’m not sure where you have been. State champion and Gatorade Player of the Year Deandre Smith Deandre Smith 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Greenville Christian | 2022 State MS put up a historic year in the Magnolia State that will be hard for many to beat. Smith possess great ability in the pocket as a passer and in the open field as a runner. He has a big arm capable of making any throw that a school could ask of him, as well as enough athleticism to run QB designed run plays. Combining his physical ability with his evident leadership skills, it is a surprise that this guy is still on the market. Smith lists offers from many of the local JuCos, as well as Lane College, Mississippi Valley State, and others.
Aaron Steele Aaron Steele 5'11" | 180 lbs | QB Kemper County | 2022 State MS | Kemper County
Passing for over 1700 yards and 15 TDs to 4 INTs and rushing for 1700 yards and 21 TDs as a senior, Steele could be one of the best dual threat quarterbacks available in the state. While he lacks height, he has all the athletic ability in the world to make a difference on a college roster. Steele has good arm strength and can operate well from the pocket, but his real strength is his ability to move. This is a guy that can make you miss in the open field, or just run straight over you. Steele publicly lists no college offers right now, but somebody will find a true diamond in this guy.
Shavario Allen | Provine
Injured 3 games into the season this year, Shavario Allen was one of the many unfortunate high school seniors that didn’t get to finish his season as he planned. Taking a look back at his junior tape and few games from this season, this is a kid that deserves a chance at the next level. Allen has a thicker frame that allows him to stand in the pocket tall and take hits while he delivers strikes downfield. This guy has a naturally talented arm capable of getting great zip on the ball. Allen throws his best ball off play-action and deep. He processes the field well and goes through his progressions that he is given. If Allen got the chance to finish out his senior season, who knows what kind of numbers he would’ve put up.
Kabe Barnett Kabe Barnett 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Oak Grove | 2022 State MS | Oak Grove
Leading Oak Grove to an 11-3 season and almost a second state title, Kabe Barnett Kabe Barnett 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Oak Grove | 2022 State MS has been one of the state’s best quarterbacks over the last 2 years. The 2020 state champ has a long frame with plenty of room to continue filling out. Barnett has a big arm and his deep ball has been one of his most intriguing attributes. This is a guy that can scan and read a defense well and put the ball where only his receiver can make a play on it. Adding in his athletic ability, this is a complete prospect as a modern day spread quarterback. Surprised he does not have more going on right now. Barnett lists offers from all major JuCos in state and will be able to make an early impact.
Marcus Beamon Marcus Beamon 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Philadelphia | 2022 State MS | Philadelphia
Passing for 1900 yards and rushing for another 1000, Marcus Beamon Marcus Beamon 6'0" | 185 lbs | QB Philadelphia | 2022 State MS totaled 27 TDs this season and was the go to guy in the Philadelphia offense. After losing some of his playmakers in the offseason, Beamon responded to adversity and had a great season for himself. Beamon has a big frame and is very comfortable navigating and maneuvering around in the pocket. When the protection breaks down, Beamon can step up and deliver an accurate strike to his receiver. Beamon is also a good runner capable of taking things himself in between the tackles or outrunning defenders to the edge. He lists prep offers, but expect him to find a home over the coming month or months.
Dawson Phillips | Mooreville
With an astounding 3798 passing yards and 42 TDs to 14 INTs, Dawson Phillips was one of the most exciting players in the state to watch this season. Phillips finished his high school career with a total 9000 total passing yards, a feat that is beyond difficult to accomplish at the high school level. When you turn on the tape, you can tell you are watching a quarterback that has “it.” Phillips steps up and moves around the pocket like a seasoned vet to find his open receiver. He gets good zip on the ball and can make any throw asked of him. With his quick release, Phillips can get the ball out of his hand faster than most guys. How this guy has no offers so far is insane. Expect some lucky school to get a high value quarterback late in the game.
