QB is arguably the most important position on the field. If you have a QB, you have a chance. Here are some 2023 prospects that should get some looks at D1 schools over the next year/
Ty Watkins Ty Watkins 6'3" | 220 lbs | QB South Forsyth | 2023 State GA | 6’2 | South Forsyth
Watkins is a big-bodied QB that can run and put some nice touch on the ball. In 2021, he accounted for over 2,000 yards of offense and finished with 24 total TDs. He was also an efficient passer who only threw two picks on the year. Watkins has a quick over the top release and puts some nice touch on the ball. Shows great footwork in the pocket and can extend the pocket with his legs. With another big camp season, he will put himself in a position to earn a D1 offer. A big QB who is a smart decision-maker and has tons of tools will be hard to pass up on.
Ben Guthrie | 6’0 | Alpharetta
Guthrie is a bonafide playmaker who can get creative without being a liability to his team. Is often used in designed runs as he has some big-time speed and make miss ability. When he scrambles, he scrambles to throw and keeps his eyes downfield. As a passer, he was super efficient his junior season, completing 67% of his passes. Can throw on the run and off-platform. Is able to mix up arm angles and fit the ball into some tight windows. Guthrie will make plays when things breakdown, and be efficient while doing so. Has already picked up some interest and visited multiple D1 schools, so that should continue,
Josiah Jarrett Josiah Jarrett 6'2" | 215 lbs | QB Dutchtown | 2023 State GA | 6’2 | Drew
Jarrett is yet another big-bodied QB with dual-threat ability. As a runner, he runs the zone-read game extremely well and does everything he can to get the extra yards. As a passer, he has great mechanics in the pocket and can make some throws even in the face of extreme pressure. Places the ball to where only his receiver can make the catch. His ability to mix up his delivery and change the velocity on the ball is possibly his most impressive attribute. Jarrett had a big camp season last year, and will be looking to do that again. A high academic kid with lots to like on film will pick up some steam on the trail.
Keegan Stover | 6’4 |
Stover is probably the most productive QB that you have never heard of. Stover is a true Pro-Style QB that threw for over 2400 yards and added 25 TDs to 2 INTs during his junior year at West Forsyth. Not the most electric runner, but he is big enough to take on tacklers and has enough speed to keep plays alive and keep the defense honest. Can attack the defense in all three levels. Has nice touch on the deep ball and puts plenty of air under it which allows his receivers to run under it. Can throw on the run and off-balanced well, mostly because he has a strong arm. Stover’s ability to make all throws and fit in any offense will make him highly sought after. With an even bigger senior season, he could be someone to watch out for.
Justin Johnson Justin Johnson 5'11" | 175 lbs | QB Central Gwinnett | 2023 State GA | 5’11 | Central Gwinnett
Smaller in stature, but does a lot of things that would grab the attention of scouts. For starters, he is an extremely quick runner who can hurt the defense with his legs. He has enough speed to get the edge on any defender and turn upfield. While he is electric with his legs, it is his passing that sets him apart. The ball comes out of his hand very naturally and he places it where only his receivers can catch it. He has a nice deep ball, but he can pick apart defenses in the short and intermediate passing game better than most QBs on film. If there is any space to throw, Johnson will complete the pass. Johnson’s game is electric, and someone should take notice.
Logan Cross | 6’6 | Social Circle
Cross is the type of player that you don’t come around often. At 6’6 with plenty of room to fill out, he definitely passes the eye test. Still, he does not sacrifice any speed or twitchiness with his large frame. He shows great mechanics in the pocket and can evade pressure with the best of them. Whenever he evades, he keeps his eyes downfield and always sets his feet before he throws. In short, he is a confident and smart decision-maker. As far as his arm? Well, he has a cannon for an arm. The ball comes out of his hand smoothly and can place it on a dime. He can also pick apart the defense underneath. Cross might be raw, but he has some serious upside that someone will be willing to bet on.
Charlie Gilliam | 6’3 | Eagle’s Landing Chrisitan Academy
As far as pure passers go, Gilliam looks like one of the best in the state for the 2023 class. He is calm and collected in the pocket and stands tall in the face of pressure, it looks like the game moves in slow motion for him. Can pick apart defenses in all 3 levels, especially in the intermediate passing game. He has great anticipation skills which allow him to deliver the ball on time and accurately to his pass-catchers. Perhaps his most impressive feature on film is his ability to mix up arm angles and velocities to fit the ball in tight windows. With a more efficient senior year, Gilliam could end up being a steal.
