2022 Potential Breakout Players: Section I Quarterbacks
In this article:
Throughout this series, I will be breaking down the potential breakout players, by section and position, for the 2022 season. I will begin with the quarterbacks and move through the sections in numerical order. To begin, we take a look at New York’s Section I. This section encompasses schools located in Dutchess, Putnam, Rockland, and Westchester counties.
Will Currid Will Currid 6'2" | 195 lbs | QB Archbishop Stepinac | 2024 State NY , Archbishop Stepinac- 2024:
Entering his Junior season, Currid is primed for a monster season. As a freshman starter in the COVID shortened 2020 season, Will led the Crusaders to a 2-2 record while passing for 769 yards with 9 touchdowns and 2 interceptions. 2021 saw Senior transfer quarterback James McCauley James McCauley 6'2" | 205 lbs | QB Archbishop Stepinac | 2022 State NY take command of the offense. Behind McCauley, Currid proved successful in limited action contributing 532 yards through the air to go along with a trio of touchdowns and a pair of interceptions. The southpaw showed improvement in his Sophomore season, albeit in limited action. With Currid back at the helm, expect Archbishop Stepanic’s passing attack to be lethal.
Michael Rescigno, Arlington- 2024:
As the field general for the Admirals in 2021, Rescigno amassed a record of 7-4 as a starter. A true dual-threat playmaker, Rescigno’s rushing ability was on full display as he racked up 582 yards on just 74 carries while tallying 5 touchdowns on the ground. Where we could really see a jump is in the lefty’s passing game. With solid arm talent and the uncanny ability to evade defenders, we could see a massive leap in his aerial production next season. Possessing a full year of varsity experience now under his belt, expect a large improvement on his completion percentage, which finished at 39%. In a ground and pound offense, Michael still managed 765 passing yards, 5 touchdowns, and just 3 interceptions.
Aidan Picart, Pleasantville- 2024:
The Class B State runner-ups will be looking to a new leader under center this season. While 2021 saw the Panthers focus heavily on their rushing attack, Aidan is their quarterback of the future. While only throwing a single pass last season, Picart saw some success at the wide receiver position reeling in 9 catches for 129 yards and a pair of touchdowns. Serving as the backup to Michael Lacapria the previous two seasons, the young left-handed QB started two games, both in 2020, finishing with an even 1-1 record. Aidan is an accurate passer with a bevy of talented weapons around him. With previous starting experience coming in the shortened 2020 season, expect Pleasantville’s offense to not miss a beat in 2022.
Nickilas Gallery, Ossining- 2023:
With a full year of experience commanding the Ossining option attack, Gallery is primed for a big 2022. Gallery led the Pride to a 3-6 record in 2021, contributing primarily on the ground. While Ossining’s offense is centered around pounding the rock, Gallery is more than capable of providing an additional dimension through the air. His stats from 2021 aren’t eye-popping (120 passing yards with a single touchdown and a trio of interceptions to go along with 129 rushing yards and 6 touchdowns on 44 carries) the offense flourished with Nickilas under center. Gallery will have an expected increase in workload for 2022, meaning we could see a drastic rise in his numbers.
Jaiden Scott, Spring Valley- 2023:
Even with a 2-7 record in 2021, Spring Valley seems to have found something special in quarterback Jaiden Scott. From the surface, Scott’s 2021 campaign seems quite unimpressive as he finished his Junior year with 1173 yards 6 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. Jaiden possesses a bit of an awkward throwing motion, something that will improve with time and coaching, but has a live arm and impressive accuracy. Scott has an insane ability to find the open man on almost any given play- a trait that will only grow with improved chemistry with his receivers. With a full season as a starter now behind him, Scott is on the cusp of a potentially electric season in 2022.
