For the first time in nearly six decades, the third-ranked Marlow Outlaws are state champions after knocking off top-ranked Washington 17-13 to win the 2A crown. Unfortunately for the Warriors, their season ended with a silver ball for the second consecutive year. The Outlaws used offense, defense and special teams to bring home the state championship in the final game of the 2021 football season.
After a scoreless first quarter, Marlow got the scoring going early in the second quarter with a 13-yard touchdown run from Jace Gilbert Jace Gilbert 6'2" | 205 lbs | K Marlow | 2022 State OK . Washington would respond by going on a 17 play drive that took up nearly eight minutes and finished it off with a short touchdown run from Kade Norman to tie the game at 7. The Outlaws would have all the momentum going into the halftime locker room after scoring with just four seconds left on a Gilbert pass to Kyle Wilson. The Outlaws would lead 14-7 at halftime and come out in the second half with the ball.
However, in the second half, Washington’s defense would absolutely shut Marlow’s offense down. The Outlaws were held to just 25 yards of total offense in the second half but their defense bent but did not break. They would give up 307 yards of total offense to the Warriors but only gave up 13 points to a Washington offense that was one of the best in Class 2A all season. Washington would rely on running back Cole Scott Cole Scott 5'11" | 190 lbs | RB Washington | 2023 State OK , who was outstanding all night. He scored on a 62-yard touchdown run and finished with 224 yards on 33 carries.
However, on the Scott touchdown run, Marlow would come right up the middle and block the extra point. So they held on to a 14-13 lead after the third quarter. Gilbert would add a 33-yard field goal to make it 17-13 and would force Washington to need a touchdown. The Warriors would threaten the Outlaws late but a Washington fumble was recovered by the Outlaws with 1:30 left and with no timeouts, the Warriors could not stop the clock and had to settle for silver for the second consecutive season.
In a battle of unbeaten teams, Marlow finished off the season perfect with a very strange win where they were outgained 307-126. But because of their defense, timely scoring and outstanding play from the entire special teams group, the Outlaws finished off the season 15-0 and raised the gold ball.
