To start, they finished up with a 10-3 record, with losses having only come to team’s such as Collins Hill, which is arguably the best team in the state, North Paulding, and lastly, Walton High School in the third round of the playoffs. This season, Brookwood showed strengths on both sides of the ball, as they had plenty of firepower on both the defensive, and offensive side of the ball. In fact, they played so well that outside of Walton’s 52 point performance against them in the third round, the most points they have allowed in a game this season beforehand was 36 points to Collins Hill.
Even though the offense is losing a large amount of players due to graduation, they still look to be able to return to full strength next year. Regardless, this season they were led by their returning star QB, Dylan Lonergan Dylan Lonergan 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Brookwood | 2023 State GA , who not only continued to rack up offers this year, but he continued to put up amazing statistics. By the end of the season, he had thrown for over 3,300 yards, and threw for 32 TD’s, while rushing for 7. The primary recipients of these passes in the air came from Alexander Diggs, Stone Bonner, and Patrick Campbell. The leader of this group was Diggs, who totaled 986 yards, and 8 TD’s. Second to Diggs was Bonner, who totaled 929 yards, and 7 TD’s. Paired with this strong aerial attack was Brookwood’s incredible ground game. Diggs also led the seige for his team on the ground, as he totaled more than 700 rushing yards, and 11 TD’s. Following this was Lonergan with over 600 yards, and Prothro with over 350 yards and 3 TD’s.
Defensively, Brookwood’s team was solid a large portion of the season. As mentioned previously, they typically held opposing teams to less than 34 points, with a large portion of their games being within the 10-24 point margin. Before losing to Walton in the third round, they had help opposing playoff teams to only 21 points. In addition to this, it should also be noted that this season, Brookwood had around 9 or more players who racked up double digit tackles. This includes the likes of Princeton Brown, Michael Haynes, Malcolm Mccain Malcolm Mccain 6'1" | 220 lbs | LB Brookwood | 2023 State GA , and Jordan Davenport. Along with this specific success, plenty of these same players also recorded sacks, including Brown who had 4, Davenport who had 9 sacks, and McCain who recorded a total of 8 sacks. Even more impressive than the large amount of sacks that Brookwood had this season was the 14 interceptions that were also recorded for their team. Players such as Campbell (4), and Michael Haynes (3) led the team in this category. Other players such as Myles Mayhorn Myles Mayhorn 5'10" | 185 lbs | DB Brookwood | 2022 GA , Elliott Cory, Princeton Brown, Malcolm Mccain Malcolm Mccain 6'1" | 220 lbs | LB Brookwood | 2023 State GA , and Jordan Davenport have also contributed with interceptions of their own.
Moving into next season, especially with the return of Dylan Lonergan Dylan Lonergan 6'2" | 200 lbs | QB Brookwood | 2023 State GA , and plenty of key playmakers on both sides of the ball, we fully expect Brookwood to be back, and ready to compete at the highest level again. While their season may have ended a bit earlier than expected this year, it is only more worth it to look forward to seeing what they can achieve next season. Until then, it will be good to track the recruiting progress of some of their most promising prospects.
