The one on one battles in person are just as great for evaluators. Being in person, evaluators can body type prospects and get a sense of how they are built early on in their careers. It may seem like a minor detail, but body typing can tell coaches and recruiters/scouts a lot about how the player can develop.
I’ve been evaluating some 2021 film for the last month and compiling notes, and it there’s finally some info to share. Here’s a quick scouting report on wide-outs and defensive backs who should impress in the camp cycle and in the 2022 season.
Javen Sewell Javen Sewell 5'10" | 175 lbs | ATH Cass Tech | 2023 State MI – Cass Tech – WR/DB
One of the most dynamic junior playmakers in 2021 had to be the Cass Tech athlete. Although he’s a great athlete, Sewell is far from just twitchy with the ball in his hands. He’s a clean route runner with an unlimited route tree. Sewell embraces contact as a defensive back and has great technique when tackling. Great press corner even against guys bigger than him. He’s a sure handed catcher as a wideout and has proved to be a big part of what Cass Tech does on offense. Sewell’s biggest strength on defense is being able to locate the football in the air and make a play on it. You can’t teach the type of instincts he has in coverage.
Triston Nichols Triston Nichols 6'3" | 190 lbs | WR De La Salle | 2023 State MI – De La Salle – WR
One of the best pure wide receivers in the state, Nichols is a lot to handle for defensive backs. He has the ability to pick up yards after the catch and he’s a dynamic route runner who can get seperation from any type of coverage. Nichols gets open downfield constantly for big play shots. He benefits from his skills on the basketball court by being able to post guys up and get the ball at its highest point. A ton of things to like on film from Nichols and he should have a huge senior season for the Pilots.
Devon Buskin Devon Buskin 6'0" | 160 lbs | DB Southfield | 2023 State MI – Southfield AT&T – DB
The Southfield At&T stud is one that jumps off screen as a special athlete. Being able to accelerate after getting beat and make a play on the ball is such a special trait for young defensive backs to have, as that level of athleticism can’t be taught. Buskin is a hard hitter who does a nice job of tracking ball carriers on the sidelines. He is technically sound as it shows in press coverage and his mirroring of receivers. With the way he can hit and make plays on the football, there’s no question he could play safety or cornerback at the next level. Coaches and recruiters will be excited to see more of that versatility in Buskin’s senior season.
