Defensive Line
Amir Frye Amir Frye 6'3" | 225 lbs | DL Walter Johnson | 2022 MD (2022) | 6’3 DE | Walter Johnson
Frye was easily Walter Johnson’s best player. He moved a lot as he played both backer and came off the edge. As an edge rusher, he was an elite pass rusher as his quick get-off and great pad level made him really hard to handle. He is also a great edge defender and does a great job of setting the edge. Frye put up some big names against some big-name competition.
Jaylen Harvey (2024) | 6’2 DE | Quince Orchard
Harvey was a force all season but he really came alive during the tail end of the season. He is unblockable off the edge as he has great body control. He can dip under blocks, get skinny, and split double teams. He also shows great discipline as he does a great job of staying home and not letting anything out the back door. He has great speed for an edge defender. Harvey will be a guy to keep an eye out for the next couple of years.
Daniel Santos (2022) | 6’0 DE | Magruder
Santos is a very versatile defensive end. He is very strong and powerful and can just bully blockers. He has the ability to play both on the inside and the outside. He is a good pass rusher as he has multiple moves and does a great job of using his hands to get blockers off of him. He also does a great job of attacking the blocker’s outside shoulder and plays the edge well. Santos was special Magruder will miss him.
Tylek Bright (2022) | 6’0 DE | Seneca Valley
Bright was Seneca Valley’s main ball carrier but he did not let that affect his defensive play. He was an impact player on his defensive. He is a playmaker that always seems to be making stops for lass and racking up sacks. He is quick and uses his quickness to get his hands on blockers before they can engage. He then does a great job of navigating traffic and finding ways to get in the backfield and making plays. Bright was one of the county’s top defensive players.
Cryst Woods (2022) | 5’9 DT | Northwest
Woods was the best interior lineman in the county this season. He plays with a very low pad level and has a quick get-off. Often times he is in the backfield before blockers can even get a hand on him. Woods has a great nose for the ball and always seems to be in the right spot at the time. He is athletic and can chase down ball carriers despite being an interior lineman. Woods had a very impressive breakout year.
Linebackers
Dillon Dunathan Dillon Dunathan 6'2" | 230 lbs | LB Damascus | 2023 State MD (2023) | 6’2 LB | Damascus
Dunathan can be an outside backer that can come off the edge and he can also be an off-ball backer. He is a great tackler and is very physical. He can set the edge and play great contain. He can also be a run-stuffing off-ball backer that can wreak havoc when he comes downfield. He does a great job of pursuit and is a star-run stopper. Dunathan is the only player to be the all-county team on offense and defense.
Shane Schwartz (2022) | 5’7 LB | Bethesda Chevy Chase
Schwartz is a very physical player. He is a fantastic blitzer and makes plays in the backfield when he does. He is a good tackler and is strong in pursuit. He also does a good job in his pass drops and is solid in coverage. Schwartz was a big reason why BCC’s defense was strong.
Liam Haley (2022) | LB | Sherwood
Haley is a swiss army knife on the defensive side of the ball. He can play linebacker, nickel, safety, and he can even rush off the edge if needed. He lined up all over the field. Haley is great in coverage. He is also a good blitzer that makes plays in the backfield. He is a great tackler and doesn’t miss many tackles. He was a real weapon for Sherwood this season.
Matthieu Ionga (2023) | 6’1 LB | Quince Orchard
Ionga was a weapon on this very aggressive Quince Orchard defense. Quince Orchard is a very blitz-heavy system and he is a very good blitzer. He is explosive and explodes through the line. When he is coming downfield he makes plays. He also has sideline to sideline range. He also can drop back into coverage and be a standout in coverage as well. Ionga will have big expectations next season.
Defensive Backs
Jalen Huskey Jalen Huskey 6'2" | 175 lbs | DB Quince Orchard | 2022 State MD (2022) | 6’1 CB | Quince Orchard
Huskey was one of the top corners in the county. In coverage, he can do it all. He can play man, zone, and excels in press coverage. His footwork is amazing and he does a great job with his hands and positioning. He also is solid at playing the ball in the air. Huskey is a true shutdown corner.
Darius Lorfils Darius Lorfils 6'2" | 170 lbs | DB Northwest | 2022 State MD (2022) | 6’2 CB | Northwest
Lorfils is a great athlete. He has the speed to keep up with any receiver. He like Huskey excels in press-man coverage. He is a ball hawk and does a great job of high pointing the ball and making a play on it while it’s in the air. He also is a good tackler when he is coming downfield. Lorfils is going to be very good at the next level.
Steven Sannieniola Steven Sannieniola 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Quince Orchard | 2022 State MD (2022) | 6’2 S | Quince Orchard
Sannieniola is a safety that can play both as a deep safety and can come in the box. He is strong in run support and does a great job of helping stuff the run. In coverage, he does a great job of reading the quarterback’s eyes and putting himself into a position to make a play. He always seems to be in a position to make a play. Sannienola was a key player on the state championship-winning team.
Ricardo Villars (2022) | 6’2 CB | Blair
Villars is a very athletic corner. He is very tall and gives receivers fits with his length and height. He has good speed and is able to keep up with most receivers. He is a true ball hawk and uses his receiver skills on defense. Villars had a great breakout season for Blair this year.
Bryce Barnes Bryce Barnes 6'0" | 165 lbs | DB Quince Orchard | 2022 State MD (2022) | 6’1 S | Quince Orchard
Barnes is a box safety that also has the ability to play coverage. He is a great run stopper and flat defender. He also can play deep and make plays in the vertical passing game. He is very physical and always seems to be knock the ball loose. Barnes had a relatively quiet role but he played it to perfection.
