The 6th grade version of this team has largely followed suit in finding success, as they reached championship week in 2013 and then again 2016-2019—winning it all in 2018 and 2019. However, they were noticeably absent from championship week last year. In a few short weeks, they’re hoping to change that narrative back to their winning ways.
How they’ll light it up: As is the case with a lot of teams from the south, they’re going to let the playmakers make plays. Expect them to come out in the spread offense to shift the opposing defense around. They should do a good amount of motion to keep things honest. Also will run a good amount of play action, after they establish the running game, as coaches are very high on Keshon Blow and expect the Buford product to hurt defenses all tournament long.
How they’ll shut it down: They plan to run a base 4-3-2 to start and see what offenses will throw at them. They’re deep at all the necessary positions to be successful in several defenses, so this could change. Coaches like what they have in the secondary and are not afraid to load up on DB’s if teams want to test them by throw it up in the air. They also feel they have big guys to flash a five-man front if they feel necessary.
Mt. Rushmore
Keshon Blow | Running Back/Linebacker
Widely thought of as the top 2028 running back in the state of Georgia. Solid build and ready to take off and score at any time. In 2020 helped lead the Buford to the championship game of the Gwinnett Football League. Used to winning and building a reputation for himself locally, looking to become a national name through the FBU National Championship tournament.
Darin Bruce | Defensive Back
Teams should simply just not throw towards him, because will more than likely pick it off. As close to a lockdown corner as I’ve seen on the 6th grade level as you’re going to find. Before suiting up for the North Atlanta Giants and learning from former New York Giant Brandon Jacobs, Bruce was locking things down for the Central DeKalb Jaguars. Last season out of eight regular season games, he had multiple interceptions in three and had a pick-six in three.
Pierson Degala | Quarterback
They don’t come much more accurate than the kid wearing number 15 for the Milton Jr. Eagles. He got a taste of the FBU National Championship last year for GMSAA and is back this year playing for GFL. He’s a very calm quarterback behind center and manages the offensive at a very mature level for being just an athlete in the class of 2028. In his most recent performance, a 52-8 playoff victory, he was 12-for-12 with five touchdowns in just two and a half quarters of play.
Kameron Barnes | Wide Receiver
After being a major contributor on the 10U GFL team that won the FBU 10U Invitational Tournament last week during National Championship week, Barnes is another year older and another year more impressive. The Peachtree Ridge athlete is a big time play maker at receiver who can score catching passes or on reverses and trick plays. He consistently showed up as an athlete in the discussion for Player of the Week throughout the season.
