Continue ReadingThe Kentucky Middle School Football Association recently released their Region Player of the Year Award winners for the 2021 season. Here’s a look at the 8th Grade Division 1 winners, my two cents on their ability and film where applicable. For reference, Division 3 means the schools in this division have the fewest male students in their school.
Region 1 – Sam Tunks | Offensive Line/Defensive Line/Linebacker | Warren East
Pops’ Two Cents: Strong at the point of contact with the opposing team. Bit of a tweener right now at 5-foot-5 and 165 pounds. Very quick first step after snapping the ball offensively as a center. Defensively can bump from linebacker to interior lineman with his hand in the dirt depending on down and distance.

Region 2 – Brody Dressel | Linebacker | North Oldham
Pops’ Two Cents: Undersized right now, listed at just 5-foot-5 and 115 pounds, but plays much bigger. Strong, fast, aggressive linebacker who reads plays extremely quickly for this level. Sure tackler who consistently wraps up and brings his body at contact, rather than reaching. Also contributed offensively as a power back.

Region 3 – Trey Davis | Quarterback | Robert D. Campbell
Pops’ Two Cents: First player from RDC to ever earn this honor. Davis has been the catalyst for the Cardinals offense, which has propelled the squad to an undefeated season, scoring 40+ points in every playoff game and is set to play in the state championship. The 7th grade team’s head coach, Bob Howard, was also named Region 3 coach of the year.

Region 4 – Kylan Combs | Running Back/Linebacker | Breathitt County
Pops’ Two Cents: Love watching Combs on film. He’s the type of fast aggressive kid on both sides of the ball that makes plays and puts fear in the opposition. Gets to full speed in a matter of a short few steps. Plays running back with a defensive mentality of running through people. Plays defense like a man possessed. Tackling machine.
