The Panthers went 8-1 in 2020 , were 9-5 in 2019 and in the 2017-2018 season had a deep playoff run resulting in an 11-2 record. This season Heritage has been successful as well and the Panthers come in as one of the hottest team in the DFW Area in 5A DI posting a 9-1 record heading into the first round against Abilene Cooper. I had a chance to get eyes on the Panthers a few weeks ago and here are some of their Difference Makers who will be key contributors.
Hogan Wasson | Wide Receiver | Class of 2022
Wasson is a playmaker!!! As a wide out, he runs crisp routes, has the speed to bust up coverages and get deep, knows how to get open, has elite quickness off the line, shifty in the open field making defenders miss, and excels at runs after the catch. Wasson can line up anywhere on the offensive side of the ball and for the Panthers he is a key cog in the their potent offense. Hogan is a weapon on special teams as a kick and punt returner, which allows him to be a threat to score from any distance. Wasson can also play defensive back. Hogan has great hands and rarely drops passes thrown his way. Against Red Oak in a district game, Wasson caught a one handed deep bomb, contested grab with a defender draped on him that was one of the best catches that I have seen this season. I had the opportunity on the 7v7 circuit this past spring to see Wasson in action and he continues to prove he is one the top wideouts when he is on the field. Whatever college campus that Wasson steps on will get an immediate upgrade to their offense.
Weston Smith | Quarterback | Class of 2023
This season was my first opportunity to get eyes on Smith and I left impressed. Weston has a big arm, excellent touch on the deep ball, pinpoint accuracy on the short to intermediate balls and moves well in the pocket. At 6’5 215 lbs., Weston sees the field well, stands tall in the pocket, and has the athleticism to scramble as well as run RPO action within the Panthers offensive scheme. Smith has complete control of the Colleyville offense and spreads the ball around to the multiple weapons he has at his disposal. Smith received an offer from Florida State earlier in the year and his recruiting stock is hot with recent visits to Texas Tech, Notre Dame and the University of Louisiana.
Isaac Shabay | Running Back | Class of 2022
Shabay is a key contributor in the Panther running game. Isaac runs hard between the tackles, has quick feet, shifty at the point of attack, reads his blocks well, can cut on a dime, makes defenders miss easily in the open field and has the speed to go the distance from anywhere on the field. Shabay has great hands and is a weapon out of the backfield. The Panthers can count on Shabay to be a difference maker as they began the playoffs. Shabay is committed to the University of Penn.
Brannan Mannix | Safety | Class of 2022
Mannix is a playmaker at the safety position. Brannan is a great tackler in the open field, takes proper pursuit angles, can come down and cover wideouts in the slot, has a fluid back pedal, changes direction quickly, has a nose for the football and diagnoses plays quickly. Mannix has been a three year varsity starter and has gathered lots of interest from colleges. Look for Mannix for to be a force in the Panther secondary.
Dylahn McKinney Dylahn McKinney 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Colleyville Heritage | 2022 State TX | Cornerback | Class of 2022
McKinney has next level size at the cornerback position that college defensive coordinators covet. Dylahn is long, has great range, top level speed, fluid hips, great turnover, changes directions quickly and has next level closing speed. McKinney is smart and versatile which allows him to play man coverage or zone within the Panthers defense and be elite no matter what the opposing offense put in front of him. McKinney has the talent to shut down one side of the field or travel to follow the opposing teams best wideout. Dylahn is committed to Oklahoma State.
Bryan Hansen | Kicker | Class of 2022
Hansen is one top three kickers I have seen this season. Bryan is a weapon for the Panthers special teams. An elite specialist of Hansen’s caliber can be a game changer. Bryan keeps the Panther opponents specials teams a non factor with booming kickoffs for touchbacks and deep punts that give the Panthers an advantage and changes field position in their favor. Hansen’s season stats: 12/14 FGs, 35-35 PATs, 37/57 on touchbacks for the regular season. Hansen is special. Bryan just recently committed to the University of Texas San Antonio.
