In the end, it was the play of the Stallion offensive line and the running game and a stingy defense that helped in a shut out of York, 29-0 on Friday night.
Let’s get into the standouts and notes from the contest:
South Pointe
- Senior DL Anquerrious Davis Anquerrious Davis 6'0" | 225 lbs | DL South Pointe | 2022 State SC (@AnquerriousD) – Davis got in the backfield early and often as he had several tackles for loss in the first half, which included a tackle on a reverse where he displayed good discipline.
- Senior RB Ja’Quan Thompson (@JQThompson03) – Thompson got a heavy workload in the first half as he did not go down easily throughout the evening. He found a huge hole on a drive where he capped it off with a touchdown to go up 15-0 in the second quarter.
- Senior QB Zay McCrorey Zay McCrorey 6'5" | 220 lbs | QB South Pointe | 2022 State SC (@ZayMccrorey1) – McCrorey did a solid job of executing the quick passing game in what was his most complete game of the season. He has great velocity on the throws and he made the high percentage completion throws, especially in the second half.
- Senior WR Waymond Jenerette (@WaymondJeneret3) – Jenerette had South Pointe’s first touchdown of the evening on a jet sweep. The connection between him and his quarterback was active in the second half as he was the go-to target and McCrorey called the connection “like Christmas. Every time I throw it to him, I know he’s going to catch it, so that’s my backbone”
“Our boys stepped up to the challenge. We saw some things on film that we wanted to attack and our boys executed the way we practiced.” – South Pointe coach DeVonte Holloman on the win
York
- Sophomore QB Ayden Davis Ayden Davis 6'0" | 170 lbs | QB York | 2024 State SC – Davis was effective at times on the quarterback power in getting a quick two to three yards when he did carry the ball.
- Senior WR Jevon Long Jevon Long 5'9" | 150 lbs | WR York | 2022 State SC (@JevonLong1) – Long had a completion off a tip to himself to help set up the Cougars in the third quarter.
- Senior LB Ashton Edington Ashton Edington 5'8" | 170 lbs | LB York | 2022 State SC (@ashton_19) – Eddington had a tackle for loss on South Pointe QB Zay McCrorey Zay McCrorey 6'5" | 220 lbs | QB South Pointe | 2022 State SC on a third and short. His name was called several times as he was involved in tackles throughout the night.
- Sophomore RB Javarus Gutherie (@javarusguthrie) – Gutherie was used on counter plays to begin the third quarter as he put the Cougars in position to score. He ran hard in between the tackles. He nearly had an interception with great coverage on South Pointe’s opening drive of the contest.
“They were just bigger, faster and stronger and they got push on us. Our game (plan) was to run the ball as much as we could and try to eat up clock and slow the game down but we just couldn’t get first downs. I thought the defense played hard, but just the ineffectiveness of our offense to be able to get first downs and keep our defense off the field was a big key.” – York coach Dean Boyd on the loss
Additional notes and standouts
- South Pointe’s Demari Kendrick (@KendrickDemari) had a completion to make a man miss on 3rd down in the first quarter. Kendrick had a touchdown in the fourth quarter, effectively ending any hope of a York comeback.
- York’s Mekayle Burris Mekayle Burris 6'2" | 200 lbs | LB York | 2022 State SC (@k8_Officiall) recorded a TFL in the first quarter as he continued what has been a great year.
- South Pointe’s Ty Chambers (@Tychambers_) and Caleb Sims (@Calebsims34) were used at running back and both ran hard in between the tackles in the inside tackle and were tough to bring down at first contact.
