JJ Kohl JJ Kohl 6'6" | 225 lbs | QB Ankeny | 2023 State IA , QB, Ankeny, Twitter
The ability from the pocket that Kohl has put on display lately is nothing short of outstanding. He was 10/15 for 272 yards and 2 touchdowns in a rout of Lincoln. Everything from his footwork at the snap to the mechanics of his release, and each detail in between, looks so mature for a young Quarterback. The pinpoint accuracy he put on a back shoulder throw couldn’t have been more dead on. His game has certainly developed and refined over the course of the season.
Carson Renken, QB, Waukee Northwest, Twitter
Renken and the Wolves captured a signature victory in week 9 over Urbandale. He had 230 total yards and 2 total touchdowns in a hard fought, slugfest of a game. The Wolves forced a turnover early on and Renken capitalized on the sudden change. He took the first down snap 18 yards to the house on Zone Read. He later nailed a post route downfield for a 50 yard gain and a whip route for a score that proved to be the winner. Renken put on a gutsy performance.
Jon Pressswood, RB, For Dodge, Twitter
Presswood had himself a big night in week 9 against LeMars racking up 249 yards and 2 touchdowns on 30 carries. The physical back hammered into the defensive front over and over again picking up hard earned yards. Presswood broke a ton of tackles in this one and his style of running was just too much for his opponent to take. On one play, a GT Counter, Presswood gained about 12 yards, absolutely trucked the Free Safety, and battled forward for a few more.
Trey Campbell Trey Campbell 6'4" | 180 lbs | WR Cedar Falls | 2022 State IA , WR, Cedar Falls, Twitter
Campbell’s big-time week 9 was the difference maker for the Tigers in a big win over Dubuque Senior. He caught 4 passes that went for 176 yards and 3 touchdowns. He scored on a go route, a post-corner, and a flea flicker. Campbell’s footwork and speed were very much on display in this one; each of his routes sold something else to his opponents and he found himself wide open. Campbell also made some key, touchdown saving tackles on defense.
Harrison Rosenberg Harrison Rosenberg 6'2" | 170 lbs | WR Clear Creek-Amana | 2022 State IA , WR, Clear Creek-Amana, Twitter
Rosenberg has gone up against some of the top Defensive Backs in Iowa this season, as was the case in week 9, and got the better of them. His 4 reception, 100 yard, 2 touchdown game against Newton was a statement. Rosenberg scored from 48 yards on a fade that he went up, over, and muscled away from the defender to catch. He scored on a second fade from 30 yards and impressively got his opponent to open up the wrong way and it was all over from there.
Brady McDonald Brady McDonald 6'3" | 210 lbs | TE Independence | 2024 State IA , TE, Independence, Twitter
McDonald, one of the top Tight End prospects in Iowa, showed why that’s the case in week 9 as he hauled in 3 passes for 131 yards and 2 touchdowns. As impressive as anything on Friday night was how well he blocked; his contributions there sprung a couple of touchdown runs. One of his own scores went for 79 yards. He slipped behind coverage on a roll out, caught the ball, and outran everyone to the end zone. The speed and size he has is a deadly combination.
Clark Younggreen, OL, Mount Vernon, Twitter
Younggreen has paved the way in the trenches for the Mustangs rushing attack all year and he helped his Running Back to go off for 327 yards in week 9. The big Center made two key blocks on a counter that went for 80 yards. He took care of the Nose and climbed straight to the next level to pin Linebackers on the other side of the field. Younggreen gets a ton of movement off the ball, especially as a Center, has meathooks for hands, and finishes blocks with authority.
Diego Cortes Diego Cortes 5'11" | 215 lbs | DL Bettendorf | 2022 IA , DL, Bettendorf, Twitter
Cortes has been one of the most productive edge defenders in Iowa for a while. That was very true in week 9 as his 8.5 tackle, 4 TFL, and 1 sack game helped Bettendorf to a win over Davenport North. He is a bully on the back side of the formation and wreaks havoc in the boundary. Cortes plays a traditional 5 technique or tightly aligned Outside Linebacker. The way he strikes from his stance or space is violent, stifles blocking, and generates opportunities to make plays.
Colin Kakacek Colin Kakacek 6'2" | 245 lbs | DL Dallas Center-Grimes | 2022 IA , DL, Dallas Center-Grimes, Twitter
Kakacek applied a ton of inside pressure in his 4 tackle, 2 TFL, 2 sack week 9 performance. His first sack came from a 3 technique as he pressed his Guard vertically with a rip, destroying the pocket, and spun back to Quarterback depth to finish the play. The second came on a bull rush that put his opponent in the Quarterback’s lap; he disengaged and got to the ball in a hurry. Kakacek later feathered a downblock and blew up the backfield perfectly. He was disruptive.
Tanner McKimmey, LB, Humboldt, Twitter
McKimmey recorded 8 tackles, a TFL, and a sack in week 9 against an Algona offense that has explosive playmakers. His efforts limited their attack and resulted in a win. McKimmey is a downhill force who gets to his gap and shoots his shot when that’s where his keys take him. He does really well at matching the path of ball carriers when plays go away or off-tackle. His ability to diagnose, locate, and track is why he finished the regular season as a top ten tackler.
Watts McBride Watts McBride 6'0" | 175 lbs | DB Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA , DB, Washington, Twitter
McBride was elite on both sides of the ball in the Warriors week 9 win. He ran for 139 yards and a touchdown on 24 carries and added 5.5 tackles, 2 sacks, and 3 TFL. He was a terror blitzing off the backside. He overpowered a Tackle with a bull-pull for one of his sacks. His best play came on an inside gap blitz; he leaped through the line of scrimmgae and met the ball carrier as soon as he took the handoff. McBride’s touchdown came from 23 yards out on a Lead Dive.
