Because of the smaller schools in the more rural parts surrounding Grand Rapids, most don’t look to the Silver league for football. Though some of the best teams in Division 5 reside in this league. Let’s go over the standings, and highlight some impact players.
Standings
(6-0) Comstock Park: After an abysmal 1-6 campaign last season, Comstock Park is off to a perfect start standing at 5-0, along with being undefeated in league play. RB Tyler Dewitt isn’t the fastest back, but he’s patient and surprisingly elusive. I expect Dewitt to play a key role in the offense tomorrow against Belding.
(4-2) Belding: Opposite to Comstock Park’s 2020, Belding is coming off a 7-2 season with a playoff loss against Catholic Central. They run a T-Wing offense and they do it well, as they have a great offensive line featuring many RB’s. I give tons of credit to SO QB Anthony Szubinski for making great reads, running well, and throwing accurate short balls when necessary.
(3-3) Hopkins: Because of their 2-1 league record, Hopkins sits at the #3 spot. They’re a very balanced team, having equal talent on both sides of the ball. C Noah Dame stands out as a great center.
(4-2) Sparta: In a weird spot, Sparta finds itself in 4th place despite 2 1-possession losses. In other words, Sparta is a better team than what the standings would suggest. SS Dylan Turoski leads the charge on defense. Sparta has a good shot to win out, which would surely secure a playoff spot.
(2-5) Kelloggsville: With statistically the worst defense in the Silver, Kelloggsville is in a really rough spot. In fact, the offense is good, scoring 34PPG led by WR Jabari Campbell. The simple fact of the matter is that the defense needs to improve if they want to get any wins together.
(1-5) Godwin Heights: Again, this is a team with an offense that can score, but a lackluster defense. I’m looking to see Godwin heights really improve in all departments next season. Jeremiah Drake Jeremiah Drake 6'5" | 225 lbs | QB Godwin Heights | 2022 MI is a special QB standing at 6’5, though they won’t have him next season.
(1-5) Calvin Christian: This is a team that frankly hasn’t been good on any level. Coming off a 70-22 loss to Kelloggsville, the locker room can’t be too optimistic. It’s a tough season for Calvin Christian, though hopefully, their youth can blossom next season.
