I like what I see thus far from these guys, as they will all be exciting players to follow up on as the season continues. Here’s a look at the top 5 passing leaders in 4A at the midway point:
Logan Rodriguez Logan Rodriguez 6'1" | 175 lbs | QB Sunnyside | 2022 State WA , 6’1″ 175lbs, Sunnyside ’22
Rodriguez has thrown for 1,391 yards and 14 TD’s, with just 2 INT’s through 5 games. He’s shown solid arm strength with velocity to be able to drive balls into tight windows, hit field-side out routes and comebacks, and intermediate crossing routes all with good placement. He’s flashed the ability to throw under pressure, or even evade pressure and throw on the run. So far a solid year for Rodriguez.
Jake Schakel Jake Schakel 6'1" | 195 lbs | QB Emerald Ridge | 2024 State WA , 6’1″ 185lbs, Emerald Ridge ’24
This young gun is emerging as a dangerous QB prospect, as he’s already put up 1,260 yards and 15 TD’s through the air. He has been showing excellent pocket mechanics with the ability to step, slide, and maneuver around pressure while keeping his eyes downfield. He’s shown good anticipation for routes to develop and can buy time to hit throws in late windows. He has shown the ability to hit all 3 levels of throws with placement with the ability to finesse throws in. Big time D1 2024 prospect to know as he continues to impress each week and will only get better.
River Lien River Lien 6'1" | 200 lbs | QB Glacier Peak | 2023 State WA , 6’1″ 200lbs, Glacier Peak ’23
Lien has thrown for 994 yards and 13 TD’s thus far. He’s a very athletic kid and has been an absolute playmaker behind center through 5 games. He’s shown the ability to extend plays and deliver accurate throws downfield, and has had numerous plays where he should’ve been sacked but was able to escape and make something happen. In the pocket, he seems to read coverages fairly well and delivers throws with nice touch. An intriguing Jr. QB to watch with good potential going forward.
Joshua Wood Joshua Wood 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Graham-Kapowsin | 2022 State WA , 6’3″ 185lbs, Graham-Kapowsin ’22
This dual-threat QB has really showcased his arm talent through the first half of the season by throwing for 812 yards and 14 TD’s. He delivers with a smooth and fluid release and hits throws with solid timing and placement. He’s shown the ability to extend plays and throw off-platform on the money for numerous big plays. If he’s kept inside the pocket, he can just sit back and dice up defenses with his arm talent. Just an impressive all-around athlete and he is set to commit on Friday, October 8th at 2:30pm MST, which is between three FCS programs: Eastern Washington, Portland State, and Idaho State.
Luke Gale, 6’0″ 160lbs, Eastmont ’24
Another young prospect who is impressing thus far, Gale has thrown for 541 yards and 6 TD’s, on only 58 attempts throughout 5 weeks. He possesses a slender build and frame with room to put on size, and has been a very effective deep ball passer, surprisingly out of a Wing-T set. He has flashed the ability to make quick reads and get the ball out quick on shorter route concepts, but has done his best work airing it out downfield with solid touch and placement.
