What We Saw: Chapin Trio Shines In Big Win Over B-C

Chapin has had a three-headed attack of [player_tooltip player_id="139289" first="Jayden" last="Bradford"], [player_tooltip player_id="89315" first="Bennett" last="Galloway"] and [player_tooltip player_id="59482" first="Zavier" last="Short"] to open the 2021 campaign 4-0. It was more of the same Friday night in a 41-21 win over previously unbeaten Brookland-Cayce. Galloway, a North Carolina State commit, took center stage in this one. The senior running back finished with 165 yards and one touchdown on 21 carries and added 61 receiving yards on four catches and another score. His 24-yard touchdown reception was a screen play where Galloway made a couple of guys miss then he powered through a couple of arm tackles inside the 10-yard to end up walking in the end zone. Bradford, just a sophomore who will take a recruiting trip to Penn State this weekend, used the short passing game and his legs in this one. The Bearcats put up a decent pass rush, so Bradford did a lot of scrambling and dump downs. He was 8-of-13 for 139 yards with one touchdown and he added 71 yards rushing with another score. Short had 50 yards receiving with nine rushing yards and one TD. He also played safety on defense. “They’re phenomenal. They understand the game of football. That is a dying breed in high school football anymore – young men that just understand everything that as coaches that we’re trying to do. Add the athletic ability on top of it, it’s phenomenal,” Chapin coach Justin Gentry said. OTHER STANDOUTS Those were not the only standout performers for Chapin. Senior defensive back Justin Powe had an interception in his second straight game. Junior defensive end Max Drag had a fumble recovery, a batted down pass and was in the backfield a lot of the night. Senior kicker [player_tooltip player_id="153255" first="Mason" last="Suber"] was perfect on five extra points and added field goals from 38 and 37 yards. All but one of his kickoffs reached the end zone for a touchback. His punting was also solid. Brookland-Cayce never got on-track on either side of the ball, but several players had impressive outings. Junior quarterback [player_tooltip player_id="199432" first="Tanner" last="Staton"] was instrumental in the offense since the Bearcats never got going in the run game. Staton did have a 16-yard touchdown run late. He was adjusting to not having leading receiver Jordan Wise, who broke his leg last week, and Staton had several dropped passes that were on the money. Junior defensive back Jadyn Johnson was impressive while junior linebacker Benjamin Pugh had a solid game from the middle. He also added a rushing touchdown. Sophomore Kamden Sox rarely left the field. Sox played tackle on offense and lined along the defensive front and had several standout plays from there as well.
