We wanted to hold off on a couple of these until we got the official numbers. Simply, they didn’t seem plausible the first time around.
Turns out, those figures were even better than initially reported. Two quarterbacks and two running backs put up some big nights. And while not all four players helped their respective teams to a victory in Week 2, their performances spoke for themselves.
Still, we’re going to do something of that for them.
Tyler Haley Tyler Haley 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Beaufort | 2022 State SC , Beaufort
The Eagles quarterback is quietly putting together a solid campaign through three games. His latest effort – which pushed Beaufort to 3-0 on the season – included 282 passing yards, another 53 on the ground and three total touchdowns in a win over Benedictine (Ga.). The scrappy lefty is ensuring that people are keeping a close eye on Bryce Lybrand’s program this season.
Jahleel Porter Jahleel Porter 5'11" | 185 lbs | RB West Ashley | 2022 State SC , West Ashley
While it came in a losing effort against Goose Creek, Porter’s first game of 2021 probably set the tone for what’s to come. The West Ashley senior rushed 28 times for 167 yards and two touchdowns and caught a pass for a third score. The Goose Creek defensive front seven is pretty darn good, so if Porter is able to do that against the Gators, there’s no telling who will slow him down this year.
Reggion Bennett Reggion Bennett 5'9" | 170 lbs | WR Trinity Collegiate School | 2022 State SC , Trinity Collegiate
We warned y’all that Bennett’s insane numbers may qualify him week after week, and we weren’t kidding. He followed up his four-touchdown performance two Fridays ago with another one against Pinewood Prep. This time, it was 14 carries for 222 yard and three scores, and another touchdown receiving. Just on the ground this year, he’s 46 carries for 580 yards (12.6 ypc) and seven touchdowns.
LaNorris Sellers LaNorris Sellers 6'3" | 215 lbs | QB South Florence | 2023 State SC , South Florence
Consider this fact from Sellers’ second game-ball performance of the season. The Bruins (3-0) notched 572 yards of offense in a 63-28 win over Irmo. More than 400 of those yards were directly attributed to the junior quarterback. Sellers, threw for 296 yards and five touchdowns and ran for another 110 yards. And he’s now accounted for 13 touchdowns through three games. It’s no wonder the rest of Region VI-4A is keeping close tabs on the Virginia commit.
