This week of Mississippi high school football could be the best of the season. The amount of high quality matchups this week is unreal. With explosive offenses taking on dominant defenses, cross town rivalries, and college level prospects all over the field, expect some crazy highlights this week. Let’s take a peak at some previews of where our eyes will be this week.
Biloxi vs Pearl
Biloxi (1-1) travels to Pearl (2-1) in a game that will have a ton of attention. Quarterback Deljay Bailey Deljay Bailey 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Petal | 2023 State MS and receiver Deon Hardin Deon Hardin 6'0" | 180 lbs | WR Biloxi | 2022 State MS have been one of the deadliest duos in the state, but the Pearl defense has been on fire this season as well. Pearl has only allowed 26 points on the season and has done a great job at keeping teams out of the end zone. However, Pearl isn’t the only team bringing defensive star power to this game. With game wrecking defensive lineman RJ Moss RJ Moss 6'4" | 250 lbs | DL Biloxi | 2022 State MS , Pearl will have their hands full. Excited to watch this one go down to the wire.
Greenville Christian vs Oak Grove
We weren’t supposed to get this matchup at the beginning of the season, but we sure are happy we have it now. Quarterbacks Deandre Smith Deandre Smith 6'2" | 210 lbs | QB Greenville Christian | 2022 State MS and Kabe Barnett Kabe Barnett 6'3" | 185 lbs | QB Oak Grove | 2022 State MS face off in what should be one of the best games all year long. Two of the state’s best receivers will also be facing off, with Chris Bell Chris Bell 6'2" | 210 lbs | ATH Yazoo City | 2022 State MS representing Greenville Christian and Tyrell Pollard Tyrell Pollard 6'2" | 180 lbs | WR Oak Grove | 2022 State MS representing Oak Grove. Oak Grove’s offensive line is one of the strongest in the state – will GC be able to stop them? All eyes should be on this game this week.
Jackson Academy vs Madison Ridgeland Academy
Two of the MAIS premier powerhouses face off this week with a lot on the line. Jackson Academy, led by transfer quarterback Tate Collins, has one of the most electric offenses in the conference. With backs Dakota Jordan Dakota Jordan 5'11" | 185 lbs | ATH Canton Academy | 2022 State MS and Marcus Harris Marcus Harris 5'9" | 225 lbs | RB Jackson Academy | 2022 State MS , any carry can be taken to the end zone from anywhere on the field. MRA is led by QB John White, who currently is in the top 5 in all major passing statistics. White has no shortage of targets to throw to, especially with big time wide out Davis Dalton Davis Dalton 6'3" | 185 lbs | WR Madison-Ridgeland Academy | 2022 State MS on the outside. Expecting a high scoring shootout between these two.
Lake Cormorant vs Southaven
Quarterback Telvin Amos Telvin Amos 5'11" | 170 lbs | ATH Lake Cormorant | 2022 State MS has been dominating both on the air and on the ground this season, but Lake Cormorant hasn’t played a defense like Southaven yet. Led by recent Texas commit Aaron Bryant Aaron Bryant 6'4" | 300 lbs | DL Southaven | 2022 State MS and 2023 safety John Slaughter John Slaughter 6'2" | 180 lbs | DB Southaven | 2023 State MS , this unit has only allowed 22 points in 3 games played this season. However, Southaven has struggled on offense and could get behind early due to how dominant Lake Cormorant has been on offense. Watching this one closely; should come down to the very last drive.
Louisville vs Starkville
A classic game here between two of Mississippi’s oldest powers. Starkville enters with 2 games under their belt, scoring over 28 points in both match ups. New quarterback Trey Petty has looked sharp and this Starkville defense looks much improved from last season. Louisville comes in 3-0, blowing out every opponent they have played so far. Both these teams will playing their most difficult game so far this year. Watching for this one to be a close defensive match with low scoring.
Moss Point vs Gautier
Gautier enters 2-0 on the season boasting one of the most explosive offenses in Mississippi. Led by QB Kaden Irving Kaden Irving 6'2" | 215 lbs | QB Gautier | 2023 State MS and WR AJ Phillips, this offense could be on their way to shatter some state passing records. Moss Point enters 2-2, facing some difficult teams along the way. Defensive lineman Jamarious Brown Jamarious Brown 6'4" | 255 lbs | DL Moss Point | 2023 State MS will give quite a test for this offensive line to prepare for, as Brown could be the best edge rusher Gautier has played against so far. If you like a lot of scoring, this game is the one for you this week.
Neshoba Central vs Holmes County Central
Quarterback Eli Anderson Eli Anderson 6'2" | 190 lbs | QB Neshoba Central | 2022 State MS and the red hot Neshoba Central Rockets take on an extremely talented Holmes County Central defense led by Miami commit Khamauri Rogers Khamauri Rogers 6'1" | 160 lbs | DB Holmes County | 2022 State MS . Both teams enter the game looking like potential contenders for the 5A title – this is a game we could see a rematch of later in November. Holmes County will look to stop a pass game that few have figured out yet, while Neshoba Central’s defensive line and backers will have to be on their A game to stop this rushing attack led by Jerrell Boyd Jerrell Boyd 5'9" | 185 lbs | RB Holmes Central | 2022 State MS . Exciting matchup that will draw a ton of attention.
Oxford vs Lafayette
A cross town rivalry, these teams look forward to playing each other every single year. Oxford has been one of the most efficient offenses in 5A, while Lafayette has been incredibly dominant on defense. Oxford’s two quarterback system of senior Michael Harvey Michael Harvey 6'0" | 180 lbs | QB Oxford | 2022 State MS and junior Trip Maxwell Trip Maxwell 6'2" | 185 lbs | QB Hartfield Academy | 2023 State MS has led a great pass game downfield, but Lafayette’s two super star defenders DJ Burgess DJ Burgess 6'3" | 250 lbs | DL Lafayette County | 2022 State MS and Mario Wilbourn Mario Wilbourn 6'1" | 215 lbs | LB Lafayette County | 2022 State MS have been stingy with giving up points. Although this is a non-district game, expect these two teams to treat this game as the game of the year. This one is for year long bragging rights across Oxford, MS.
