Being a two-way player is very common for many high school athletes, but being dominant in more than one position on either side of the ball is no easy task. This article will highlight the names of ten senior athletes who fill multiple roles for their team, yet they are still flying underneath the recruiting radar.
Pyreese Miller Pyreese Miller 5'10" | 175 lbs | DB Arapahoe | 2022 State CO | Arapahoe | 5’10”, 175lbs | DB/RB
Miller is an amazing runner with excellent vision and an elite ability to make would-be tacklers miss by using shifty jump-cuts and top-tier acceleration. When on the other side of the ball, he lines up as a defensive back who can cause chaos in the backfield from the nickel position or be a ball-hawking member of the secondary. Through the first two games of the season, Miller accounted for 185 yards and three touchdowns off of 26 carries as a rusher. Defensively, he had one pass break up and one interception. These stats do not include his performance in game three where he racked up a plethora of rushing yards, caught a pass for a touchdown, forced a fumble, and snagged an interception.
Croix Burney | Rock Canyon | 5’11”, 160lbs | RB/CB
Burney is a shifty player who can use his vision to run between the tackles while also being patient enough to allow his blockers to create holes within the defense for him to exploit. Once he reaches the second level, he is able to use his elite acceleration and speed to outrun just about everyone on the field. Through the first three games of the season, Burney has a total of 229 yards and two touchdowns from 27 carries, along with 177 yards and one touchdown as a returner.
Miles Poole | Thornton | 6’1”, 190lbs | LB/RB
Poole is a player who stands out off the field because of his size then holds the spotlight while on the field due to his playmaking abilities. After missing his junior season and the first game of this season, Poole has looked nothing less than phenomenal during these last two weeks. He has carried the ball 32 times for 197 yards and two touchdowns, while quickly becoming the team’s second-leading tackler with a total of 20 and one sack. Poole’s ability to relentlessly track a ball carrier while using his speed to chase him down is borderline elite.
Herschel Craig III | Castle View | 6’4”, 210lbs | OLB/TE
Craig III is a big player with a dominant presence and immovable strength coming off the edge. He is a tough player who forces his opponents to do everything they can to play away from him. As a defender, he has a total of five tackles, two sacks, and 11 quarterback hurries. As a tight end, he has a total of 30 yards and one touchdown off of two receptions. Craig III is moves extremely well for his size and is a large part of the reason why his team is as dominant as they are.
Zavier Carroll Zavier Carroll 5'10" | 185 lbs | RB Regis Jesuit | 2022 State CO | Regis Jesuit | 5’9”, 185lbs | RB/MLB
Through the first three weeks of the season, Carroll as tallied 221 yards and one touchdown off of 31 carries as a running back. He is a stout player who can powerfully run between the tackles while also using his speed to outrun defenders on the outside. As a backer, Carroll does a great job at stacking the box and playing against the run. He is a sure tackler with good eyes who plays his assignments well by watching the ball and not over-pursuing the ball carrier.
Jaydin Gonzales | Denver North | 6’0”, 160lbs | WR/DB/P
Gonzales has eight receptions for 125 yards and one touchdown as a receiver, as well as six carries for 31 yards as a rusher. Defensively, he has 14 total tackles, one pass breakup, one interception, and a punt block. As a punter, he booted a total of 194 yards from five punts with one being pinned within his opponent’s 20 yardline.
Jaydin Hedelius Jaydin Hedelius 6'1" | 155 lbs | WR Berthoud | 2022 State CO | Berthoud | 6’1”, 155lbs | WR/DB
Hedelius is a possession receiver with reliable hands and an uncanny ability to go up and catch the ball at its highest point. He is precise with his releases and extremely dangerous when the ball is in his hands while in open field. Defensively, he is a physical player and a sure tackler when coming down from his cornerback position. Through the first two games of the season, Hedelius recorded 10 receptions for 138 yards and two touchdowns.
Hunter Johnson | Englewood | 6’1”, 165lbs | WR/DB
Through the first three weeks, Johnson recorded 16 receptions for 248 yards and four touchdowns. He leads his team in tackles with a total of 27 and has two field goal blocks, one fumble recovery, and one interception that he returned for 95 yards. Johnson has a total of 389 all-purpose yards between his offensive and defensive plays.
Blake McOmber | Bear Creek | 6’1” | WR/CB
McOmber is a well-rounded athlete who possesses a reliable skillset as a wide receiver and as a cornerback. He is the team’s leading receiver, tallying 199 yards and two touchdowns off of 11 receptions. As a defensive back, McOmber has a total of 14 tackles, three pass breakups, and one interception that he returned for a 62 yard touchdown.
Anthony Vieth Anthony Vieth ATH Mountain Range | 2022 State CO | Mountain Range | 6’1”, 210lbs | QB/RB/LB/K
Vieth’s senior season has gotten off to a good start so far. He is a big and powerful runner who possesses the ability to run through and around tacklers. Over his last two games, he has solidified himself as the team’s second-leading rusher with 217 yards and three touchdowns off of 22 carries. Defensively, he has a total of 12 tackles. In addition to being a running back and linebacker this year, Vieth is also an extremely talented kicker with a very strong leg and the ability to put one through the uprights from more than 45 yards out.
