Jamison Patton Jamison Patton 6'2" | 190 lbs | DB Des Moines Roosevelt | 2023 State IA , QB, Des Moines Roosevelt, Twitter
Patton led his team, on both sides of the ball, to a historic victory in week 2 snapping to break the streak of 128 straight metro losses to suburban schools. He was responsible for 3 touchdowns and came up with a big interception on defense. Patton threw a beautiful deep ball to his outside receiver for a score when a cover 2 safety was late getting over the top; he later ran one in himself to the corner of the end zone, leaping over defenders in the process.
Jeron Senters, WR, Cedar Rapids Kennedy, Twitter
Senters made a tough and physical Bettendorf defense look pedestrian at times in week 2 posting a massive 6 REC/141 YD/3 TD game. He absolutely shook and separated from the opposition on a bubble that he took 45 yards to the house. Senters also scored on a seam from the slot and a quick shovel pass he took in the backfield on a jet. His best catch of the night didn’t go for a score; he caught a seam between defenders, took a big hit, and kept running.
Will Orness, WR, Humboldt, Twitter
Humboldt is rolling and Orness shined in week 2 against Garner Hayfield Ventura. He is quickly becoming the Wildcats’ top target and went off for 7 REC/190 YD/3 TD. He looked impressive shaking coverage on a couple of corner routes that went for scores. His third was caught on a post that split the Corner and Safety, who had no chance. Orness was just too explosive on Friday night. He made a Corner look silly on a vertical route that went for 55 yards.
Cole Filloon Cole Filloon 6'2" | 200 lbs | WR Southeast Polk | 2022 State IA , WR, Southeast Polk, Twitter
Filloon put up huge numbers, 5 REC/165 YD/ 2 TD in a big win for the Rams over a tough Valley team. His most impressive reception of the night came on a deep curl on the sideline. Filloon sold the vertical route at full speed, stopped on a dime, and made a fully extended, toe drag catch. He showed off blazing speed on each touchdown: the first, a quick slant, and the second an outside fade. His acceleration into routes and after the catch was great.
Bryant Williams, RB, Burlington, Twitter
Williams is making a big name for himself so far this season and his week 2 performance was certainly impressive as he went for 208 yards and 4 scores on 19 carries in just one half of football. Williams got downhill in a hurry and burst into space all night showing terrific vision and agility. On one carry he jump cut to evade one defender and then immediately cut back the other direction into the end zone. His change of direction was insane against Keokuk.
Mason Applegate Mason Applegate 6'0" | 200 lbs | RB Iowa City West | 2022 State IA , RB, Iowa City West, Twitter
Applegate is known as a dominant Defensive End and, this year, is showing off some incredible versatility taking running the ball. He shredded the Muscatine defense in week 2 for 220 yards and 4 touchdowns on just 11 carries. Applegate looked like a veteran taking one of those carries 69 yards to the house with a ton of patience and burst. The bruising style of running he brings to the table is no surprise, but the straight line speed really stood out and caught some eyes.
Avery Goodrich Avery Goodrich 6'6" | 275 lbs | OL Iowa City High | 2022 State IA , OL, Iowa City High, Twitter
Iowa City High is making some noise so far and that is largely due to the blocking of one of the best Offensive Lines in the state. Goodrich is leading the way for the Little Hawks who already have over 400 rushing yards and 109 points on the season. Goodrich is getting a ton of movement at Left Tackle. His ability to fire off the ball with velocity and get to second level blocks is on full display. Goodrich showed it all starts up front with authority in Week 2.
Owen Gates, DB, Ankeny Centennial, Twitter
Gates played a big role in the Jaguars’ week 2 upset win over rival Ankeny. He was excellent at Corner all night covering the Hawks’ top Receivers and neutralizing the passing threat. Gates was sticky all night, contested everything that came his way, and forced several incompletions. He even came up with some big, touchdown saving tackles. On more than one occasion it looked like Ankeny had a huge play, but Gates’ run support and open field tackling bottled it up.
Sage Holmes, LB, Linn-Mar, Twitter
Holmes was all over the field for the Lions in week 2 with a dominant performance that resulted in 11.5 tackles and an interception; he even punched one in for a score on offense. Holmes was unblockable in the box and didn’t let Liberty ball carriers breathe. On one play he read a screen, blew up the blockers, and made the play before it had a chance. On another he did a perfect job of getting over the top of blocks and shooting his shot to blow up the play for no gain.
Chase Mahoney Chase Mahoney 6'3" | 185 lbs | LB Cedar Rapids Washington | 2023 State IA , LB, Cedar Rapids Washington, Twitter
Mahoney is a tackling machine and he is paving the way for a tough Washington defense. It was a tall order in week 2 against Marion, but he was up to the task and then some. Marion couldn’t establish anything on the ground. Mahoney took his gap when keys brought him inside and leveraged off-tackle plays perfectly when keys brought him outside. His top play came on the goal line where he destroyed a block and met the ball carrier head on for no gain.
Vince Benetti Vince Benetti 6'4" | 210 lbs | TE ADM | 2023 State IA , DE, ADM, Twitter
Benetti is one of the best two-way players in Iowa and his defensive prowess took center stage in week 2 against Ballard. He was a disruptive force and made a living in the backfield on Friday. He recognized jet on one play and beat the Left Tackle before the ball could get to the edge. On a couple other runs he read action away and flew down the line to catch the play from behind. He overpowered a setting back on his way to a sack and later forced a fumble.
