One thing to be clear, is these nominees are passed over to us by local high school coaches and the game tapes we find over social media. We watch a ton of the film, but if there is a nominee with no film, we will of course feature them but it’s a lot tougher to break down their excellent performance without doing what we do best on the Prep Redzone network: break down the tape. Keep sending those emails to Nate@PrepRedzone.com, hitting us up on Twitter (@PrepRedzoneDAK), to assure that we give every kid possible throughout the Dakotas an opportunity to get exposure from their play on the gridiron! Week 5, Part II here we go Prep Redzone Dakotas subscribers.
Jaden Guthmiller | Quarterback | Spearfish (SD) | 2023
Stat Line: 15-21 189 passing yards, 35 rushing yards. Defense: 3 tackles and one interception.
Guthmiller was the biggest asset for the Spearfish Spartans in one of their biggest wins in three seasons, in which they were victorious in the win column for their first time in 25 games. Jaden had limited clips on Hudl to watch but based on that stat line that came in full from both sides of the ball, he showed his playmaker ability. The clip I did find, shows a defensive back with a huge launch angle and is an attacker of the ball carrier. Looking for more big games out of this young man for the Spartans coming this season.
John Gores John Gores 5'7" | 155 lbs | WR Fargo Shanley | 2022 State | Wide Receiver | Fargo Shanley (ND) | 2022
Stat Line: 10 receptions, 158 receiving yards, two touchdowns.
The #2 ranked WR in Fargo had a fantastic game against a solid Bismarck St. Marys team last Friday night. Do not let the size fool you, Gores has electric speed off the snap. Watching him turn on his routes provides a similar skill set, his legs are super quick on his twists. He averaged nearly a first down and half against a really good Saints defense. John also was fun to watch in the return game and I recommend college coaches to watch the first clip of his BSM tape to give this kid a chance at the next level because right now he’s offerless and it surprises me as his speed alone, good brakes, etc. should place him as a next-level prospect that is ranked just inside our top 100 prospects in the Dakotas and rising.
Michael Stevenson | Defensive Line | Hamlin (ND) | 2022
Stat Line: 13 tackles, 3 tackles for a loss, one sack.
Stevenson had an impressive stat line against Leola-Frederick last week. He does not have his tape up yet, so I followed some tape from last year to learn more about this young man’s skill sets. Michael has a well-put-together frame coming off the edge for the Chargers & does a sound job shedding off his blocks quickly. He has very forceful hands on both sides of the ball and is a small school college prospect to watch if he can get more tape together in his senior season.
Abraham Myers | Defensive End | Sioux Falls Washington (SD)
Stat Line: N/A
Somehow, someway this is the first time we are getting a full scout on Abraham Myers of the Sioux Falls Washington Warriors. Watching his game tape against Harrisburg, you have to start with the leverage he gets on his punches against a really good offensive line. He also shows excellent speed off the ball. What skill set I liked most was his ripping ability to get off blocks as he shows a good contact level and then makes his way to the ball carrier. Abraham also shows endurance, as he was all over the football field against the Harrisburg Tigers. Myers is well on his way to being a highly ranked 2023 prospect in our upcoming rankings in October as there is a lot of potential for this young man at the next level.
Carter Bahrenfuss Carter Bahrenfuss DB Harrisburg | 2022 State | Defensive Back | Harrisburg (SD)
Stat Line: 6 tackles, 2 pass breakups, 2 Interceptions
Bahrenfuss had one heck of a game he put together last week in an overtime nail-biter against Sioux Falls Washington. He showed a solid backpedal when I first rolled his film and is a deep free safety that has a great climber ability to the football. I also liked his attack speed last week as he was a great backup to his linebackers getting contact on the football. Bahrenfuss can be described as a sideline to sideline safety that has a lot of wheels of endurance and stamina. Bahrenfuss sealed the game-winning interception in this game too. He’s got me kicking myself for not putting him on our Preseason All-State Team for a defensive back, this young man just keeps getting better.
Trey Sayler Trey Sayler LB Herreid/Selby | 2022 State | Linebacker | Herreid-Selby (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: 14 tackles, 1 interception (pick 6), 4 rushes, 62 rushing yards, one touchdown.
Trey starts his game tape off with one of the most odd-looking yet athletic intercepted pick 6s I have seen (you have to watch it for yourself, college coaches). As the Wolverines fullback, Sayler runs with authority, and tackles by the ankles just don’t work out with this kid’s powerful running ability. Regardless of where Sayler is on the football field, he just loves contact and with his frame, is not someone you want to get taken out by on special teams.
Xander Sheehan | Quarterback | Hamlin (SD) | 2022
12-19, 199 passing yards, 53 rushing yards, two touchdowns.
Now loading is Xander Sheehan’s game tape vs. Leola-Frederick. Sheehan has fire-pop arm strength especially on plays over 10 yards as he shows good touch on the football when advancing it downfield. He has the mobility to be an asset to the Chargers on short-yardage first downs around the outside edges. Xander also showed off some strong precision on his deeper balls on Friday as he let his WRs catch & go to seal more yards out the Hamlin offense. Sheehan also has a quick release on screen routes.
More Big Dogs of the Week:
Ethan Hoffman | Running Back | Flandreau (SD) | 2023
Stat Line: 238 total yards (144 rushing, 30 passing, 8 receiving, 86 return), one touchdown.
Robert Hutchinson | Wide Receiver | Sioux Falls Jefferson (SD) | 2023
Stat Line: 3 receptions, 115 receiving yards (just over 38 yards per catch)
Stat Lines of the Week
No, these are not typos these are real stats in Week 5 between Centerville and Alcester-Hudson. Over 1000 yards of offense between the Tornadoes and the Cubs in which the Cubs were victorious 70-54. When state records are involved, you have to show me the tape though! Hopefully, in the coming weeks, we will roll the tape and tell you all about it!
Cole Edberg | Quarterback | Centerville (SD) | 2024
Stat Line: 32-51, 515 passing yards, seven touchdowns. Broke the state record for completions and passing yards in Week 5.
Jovey Christensen | Running Back | Alcester-Hudson (SD) | 2022
Stat Line: 36 carries, 547 rushing yards, nine touchdowns
