Week No. 2 was loaded with talent and had some very good games. Here, we take a look at Houston's top running back performances to begin the season. [caption id="attachment_198802" align="alignnone" width="300"] Photo: Cameron King, Cypress Park headshot[/caption] Cameron King 5’9 170lbs, Cypress Park High School, Senior Cypress Park’s Cameron King is the true definition of lightning in a bottle. In the Tigers’ triple-option offense, King lines up as the wingback, as he possesses top-tier speed and knows how to use it. On sweeps, he is very patient as he waits for his blocks to develop and makes powerful cuts upfield. He has true homerun ability, and his elite change of direction and vision always help him find the end zone. Even though he’s listed at 170lbs, King plays bigger than his size as he easily breaks through arm tackles and forces contact. King also can split out to the slot as he has soft hands and gets upfield with no hesitation. Kings’ skill set allowed him to explode for 270 rushing yards, three touchdowns off only 10 carries in the Cy Park 62-28 victory. He also put his receiving ability on display with a 73-yard receiving touchdown. His performance was noticed all across the state of Texas, as he was nominated for Mr. Texas Football Player of the Week. Jerrell Wimbley 5’11 185lbs, C.E. King High School, Senior Jerrell Wimbley is building off his week 1 performance with another 200-yard game on the ground. Off 21 carries, Wimbley rushed for 270 yards and three touchdowns in the 35-27 win over Strake Jesuit. Throughout the game, he displayed good footwork and balance. As things broke down in the backfield, Wimbley kept his feet under him and moving, which allowed him to explode out of the hole and find the end zone multiple times. Wimbley has a great balance of power and finesse in his game, which will allow him to continue to put up video game-like numbers every week. [player_tooltip player_id="131357" first="De’Monte" last="Seymore"] 5’8 185lbs, Manvel High School, Senior Leading his Manvel Mavericks to victory with his 225 yards and two touchdowns off 15 carries, was [player_tooltip player_id="131357" first="De’Monte" last="Seymore"]. Seymore is extremely tough to bring down as he has the perfect blend of shiftiness and power. His contact balance makes him a nightmare for defenders to bring him down. Often times it took three or four tacklers to get him to the turf. Seymore’s vision is crisp and he has no issues finding space in the second level. Seymore has good vision and cuts back gracefully to find space. I expect Seymore to have a big season behind this Maverick offensive line that he looks very comfortable running behind. Alonzo Hines 5’10 220lbs, Alief Taylor High School, Senior Alonzo Hines has legit speed to go along with hardnose running. Even if the box is loaded or the defense contacts Hines in the backfield, he still doesn’t go down. Any run can be a house-call for the high motored back. His feisty running style was in full effect in week 2, where Hines posted 230 yards and five touchdowns on the ground. Hines makes the most out of every carry he gets. He can create for himself as well as fight for extra yards, which is precisely what you want from your back. Dominic Serna 5’10 195lbs, Pearland High School, Senior Patiently waiting to be the man since he got on varsity as a sophomore, is Pearland running back, Dominic Serna. Serna had a standout performance in the close 17-14 loss to Memorial, with his 149 yards and two rushing touchdowns. Serna’s ability to fight off defenders put his team up early. On outside zone, Serna does a great job of reading his lineman and finding his lane. While he may not hold elite top-end speed, he does have a strong burst as he runs with a low center of gravity, making him difficult to bring down on first contact. Pass blocking isn’t always a running backs’ favorite job, but Serna is a willing blocker. Serna is a true team player and plays hard every single snap, regardless of his assignment. Rashod Estes 5’9 175lbs, Jersey Village High School, Junior Friday night’s electric 31-28 victory was claimed by Jersey Village in large part due to Rashod Estes’ hard-fought performance. Estes was an absolute tank and refused to be brought down, racking up 124 yards and two touchdowns. Despite being contacted in the backfield, Estes always drives his feet and fights through defenders. He initiates contact with violent intent and usually takes multiple defenders to successfully tackle him. At the goal line, he will not go down until he reaches the end zone. His battle-ready mentality carried his team to a comeback victory in the second half. Estes clutched his Falcons’ victory when he punched his way in on a 1-yard rushing touchdown with less than 20 seconds to go.
