It’s a new era for one of the top rivalries in the 405, as school district rivals Del City and Carl Albert squared off. Both programs have first year coaches that were eager to get their first victory at their new programs. After trading scores in the opening frame, Del City started to run away with the game.
Literally.
Del City leaned on the trio of senior QB Virgil Yates Virgil Yates 5'10" | ATH Del City | 2022 State OK along with senior RBs Ethan Lawrence Ethan Lawrence 6'0" | Wide Receiver Westmoore | 2022 OK and Jayson Smith Jayson Smith 6'2" | LB Del City | 2022 State OK to run up and down the field. Smith brought the power to the group, as he handed out stiff arms and shrugged off arm tackles. Meanwhile, Lawrence had electricity in his cleats. The transfer from Westmoore either juked out players in the open or ran by them with impressive acceleration. Finally, Yates brought a mixture of both. He was difficult to be brought down when defenders grabbed ahold of him. While also showing good speed and quickness to get to the edge and make plays happen.
To go along with their dynamic rushing attack, Yates was able to connect on a handful of passes to keep the Titans’ defense honest. The biggest one came early in the game on 3rd and 10. After a dropped pass the play before, Yates went right back to the air and connected with junior Jaylin Sweet over the middle. Sweet turned on the jets and outraced the Carl Albert defense for an 80 yard score. Sweet would find paydirt once more in the 3rd quarter, this time from 18 yards out.
Defensively, Del City won in the trenches. Junior Jaedon Foreman Jaedon Foreman 6'4" | DL Del City | 2023 State OK lead the ferocious Eagle front seven, as he racked tackles for losses and more disruptive plays. Helping out Foreman in controlling the line of scrimmage were seniors Darius Hampton, Brian Stocker and standout sophomore David Stone David Stone 6'4" | 270 lbs | DL Bradenton IMG Academy | 2024 State FL .
TURNING POINT
Midway through the second quarter and Del City only up one score, the Eagles faced a third and long. With their emphasis on running their receivers and Davis rarely passed on the night. But similar to the early touchdown strike to Sweet, they proved they could connect on big plays when it mattered. Davis picked up 18 yards through the air on that 3rd and 12. That kept the drive alive, which Smith also had his own big 3rd down conversion. Eventually with only 29 seconds left in the half, Davis would finish the drive off with his legs and the 28-13 lead. From that point forward, Del City was clearly in control of the game. They would use that strong first half finish and the moment it brought to pour on the points in the second half.
PLAYER OF THE GAME
Ethan Lawerence, 2022 Running Back, Del City
From a pure excitement standpoint, it goes to the new face for the Eagles. Seemingly every time he touched the ball, he produced a memorable moment. He started the game ripping off chunk plays, and as the night went on they seemingly only got longer. His first score of the night came with Del City only up one point in the second quarter. The speedy senior jetted down the sideline, broke a tackle at the five and slipped into the endzone. Lawrence’s dynamic ability kept the defense occupied all night In the fourth quarter he even took a kickoff back to the house for his second score of the night. His final touchdown came with only a couple minutes remaining, as he jetted 30 yards for that score.
