Continue ReadingThe Southwest Lakers’ defense dominated Thursday night – shutting out the Millers on their home field until late in the second half. The front seven completely shut down the Millers’ offense. They rarely let the offense cross the fifty-yard line. There were plenty of standout performances. Here are a few that I noticed.
Ben Kattreh-Kunitz, Brayden Engrav Brayden Engrav 6'3" | 280 lbs | OL MPLS Southwest | 2022 State MN , Sam Benick Sam Benick 6'4" | 240 lbs | OL Southwest | 2022 MN , and Brandon Rios Southwest DL
Individually, they each played well, but this group controlled the line of scrimmage virtually the entire game as a group. They were playing on the Washburn side of the line of scrimmage, constantly re-routing running backs and forcing the quarterback off his spot. Some of this group’s highlights included Kattreh-Kunitz shedding a blocker to make a tackle for loss. Later, Benick put immediate pressure on the quarterback, forcing the quarterback into Benick’s teammates for a sack. Benick made a tackle for loss from his defensive tackle spot and later exploded into the backfield for a sack. Early in the game, Rios engulfed the back on an attempted run up the middle.
Charlie Boucher Charlie Boucher 6'3" | 230 lbs | TE MPLS Southwest | 2022 State MN Southwest DE/OLB
I think Boucher played a little bit of standup defensive end and maybe some outside linebacker. Wherever he lined up, he was all over the field. Early on, Boucher made a tackle on the inside for a short gain. Later, he held the edge to make a tackle for a short gain. He held the edge again and forced the runner back into his teammates. Later in the game, he read the play and made a tackle on a bubble screen.
Ka’Andre Brown Southwest DB
Brown came up strong in run support and made a tackle in the open field. He was strong in run support again, turning the runner back inside so teammates could make the tackle. Late in the game, he came up with an interception on a crossing route. Brown dropped into his zone, made the pick, and returned it for a 30-yard touchdown.
Terveon Marshall-Hall Southwest DB
Marshall-Hall was step for step with a receiver and tipped the pass away. He got his hands on a second pass, tipping a pass near the goal line, preventing a touchdown.
Zaevion Henderson Washburn LB
Henderson is a hard-hitting inside linebacker. He put a hit on a runner in the open field, forcing a fumble on a solid tackle. He made a second highlight-reel hit, wrapped up the back, and stopped him for a short gain.
Gabe Cassidy Southwest DB
Cassidy blitzed and forced the quarterback out of the pocket and into a sack. Later, he filled the hole and came up with a tackle for loss.
Quick hits
Tom Hamel Washburn DB – deflected a pass on an out route on a third and five forcing a punt
Ade Batz-Rogers Southwest DB – interception on an underthrown fly pattern down the sidelines
Will Anderson Washburn LB – tackle for a short gain
