Like every year, the Metro Detroit area has plenty of talent to watch with many teams in the area fighting for a state championship. In preparation for the opening week, here are 4 matchups you won’t want to miss.
Games to watch
2021 Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic @ Wayne State – This is a cant-miss event for any high school football fan. With so many amazing teams, the Xenith Prep Kickoff Classic returns with many big-name teams and players. From Metro Detroit, we have Birmingham Groves facing Dexter on August 27th at 4 pm. It’s going to be incredibly interesting to see how Jaden Mangham Jaden Mangham 6'3" | 185 lbs | ATH Birmingham Groves | 2022 State MI performs against a great Dexter defense led by Noah Drummond.
Byron Center @ Seaholm – This Thursday night matchup sees two of the top division 2 teams face off in a rare cross-state matchup. A game that I’ll be at, I’m excited to see how Seaholm captains Jacob Vance, Jack Trinch, and Luke Wischmeyer Luke Wischmeyer 6'1" | 205 lbs | LB Seaholm | 2022 MI play in their home opener. In addition, I’m excited to see Majer Davenport in his new colors.
Avondale @ Troy – Avondale travels to Troy for a rivalry game with some big-time talent and big-time bragging rights on the table. Jake Herzog Jake Herzog 6'2" | 180 lbs | QB Avondale | 2022 MI takes the field for the first time as the starter for the Yellowjackets, while Deshawn Robinson anchors the offensive line. On the other side, the Colts have a two-headed defensive monster in Xavier Newell and Jose Manzanares, in addition to standout receiver Darius Whiteside Darius Whiteside 6'1" | 151 lbs | DB Troy | 2023 State MI II.
Brother Rice @ Dakota – As I mentioned in my Brother Rice Team Preview, the warriors have a lot to prove this season with a steep hill to climb. Gowing away to Dakota, who feature RB Aiden Dale and DB Keyone Nixon Keyone Nixon 5'10" | 170 lbs | DB Macomb Dakota | 2022 State MI , the Warriors are going to have to play great football. Whichever team wins here will have a key early-season victory.
COVID-19 cancelations are still a possibility. Every week there will be a chance that games are postponed for this reason. Make sure to check local news outlets, Prep Redzone Twitter, and other sources to make sure any game you’re looking to see is still on.
